Programs of Study

The 911 Communication and Operations curriculum is designed to provide new students, as well as current practitioners, with knowledge and skills in the areas necessary for entrance or advancement within emergency communications.

Seeking a four-year degree in education? Carteret CC offers an Associate in Arts and an Associate in Science degree in teacher preparation. Both programs are smart, affordable starts to a career in teaching and transferrable to several North Carolina four-year universities/colleges.

For individuals who need more assistance to get their skills to the high school level so they can obtain an equivalency degree, Adult Basic Education (ABE) provides instruction in reading, writing, math and technology skills.

In Carteret CC's Adult High School program, students complete the courses that they did not finish in high school to obtain the 22 credits required by the North Carolina Future Ready Core standards. Students take computer-based courses one at a time, and tuition for the courses is waived.

Graduates receive an Adult High School Diploma issued by Carteret Community College and the Carteret County Board of Education.  The AHS diploma is the equivalent of any public or private high school diploma.

The Aquaculture Academies program offers specialized training through the Shellfish Academy and the Living Shoreline Academy which focuses on sustainable marine farming and coastal conservation. The Shellfish Academy, developed in collaboration with NOAA Sea Grant, is an 8-week program providing hands-on instruction in shellfish farming, while the Living Shoreline Academy focuses on protecting and restoring waterfront ecosystems through courses in shoreline stabilization, structural design, and sustainable coastal landscaping.

Aquaculture is defined simply as the farming and husbandry of aquatic organisms. This can be growing seafood or ornamental specimens for commercial sale, environmental enhancement, research, or education. The curriculum covers all phases of Aquaculture including hatchery, growout, processing, and marketing. Students learn practical skills that prepare them for future employment in a variety of industries or for continuation at a four-year institution. The program's mission is to provide education, training, and workforce development for a rapidly expanding aquaculture industry in need of trained employees.

The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides knowledge, skills, and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs which impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential.

The Associate in Arts (AA) degree requires 60 credit hours. It’s the broadest degree Carteret CC offers, giving students the opportunity to take a wide variety of required transferable courses appropriate to all fields. It’s ideal for students who are undecided on a future major. Every credit a student earns at Carteret CC in the Associate in Arts program will count toward their degree at any one of the 16 institutions in the UNC System. Students who successfully complete an AA degree will be able to transfer to a receiving school as a junior.

The Associate in Engineering (AE) degree shall be granted for a planned program of study consisting of a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit (SHC) of courses. Within the degree program, the institution shall include opportunities for the achievement of competence in reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and basic computer use.

Every credit a student earns at Carteret CC in the Associate of Fine Arts- Visual Arts program will count toward their degree at any one of the 16 institutions in the UNC System, and Carteret CC has special articulation agreements with universities across the state and beyond for students who want to pursue a fine arts education at the university level. Students who successfully complete an AFA degree can transfer to a receiving school as a junior.

The Associate in Science (AS) degree requires 60 credit hours. It allows students to take the first two years of their baccalaureate degree at Carteret CC and enables them to transfer to one of the 16 institutions in the University of North Carolina System with junior status. An AS degree provides a strong foundation with a heavy emphasis on math and science courses for students interested in careers in architecture, agriculture, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, medicine, and more.

This program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain all types of automobiles. Includes instruction in brake systems, electrical systems, engine performance, engine repair, suspension and steering, automatic and manual transmissions and drive trains, and heating and air
condition systems.

This curriculum is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required for employment in the baking/pastry industry, including restaurants, hotels, independent bakeries/pastry shops, wholesale/retail markets, high-volume bakeries, and/or further academic studies. Students will be provided theoretical knowledge/practical applications that provide critical competencies to meet industry demands, including environmental stewardship, operational efficiencies, and professionalism. Course work includes specialty/artisanal bread, desserts/pastries, decorative work, high-volume production, and food marketing. Graduates should qualify for entry-level positions, such as pastry/bakery assistant, area pastry chef, and assistant pastry chef. American Culinary Federation certification may be available to graduates.

The Barber Academy is designed to train and prepare students for a career as barbers. Students will learn the information needed to pass the state licensure exams and the most contemporary techniques to ensure their success in school and employment. Students will learn skills, safety judgments, proper work habits, business skills, and desirable attitudes necessary to obtain licensure and for competency in entry-level positions in barbering or a related career field during the 1528 clock hour requirement.

Carteret Community College’s Bartending & Spirits Program offers professional bartending courses alongside wine appreciation classes. This program provides students with the skills and knowledge to master cocktail preparation, mixology techniques, and the art of wine tasting. Whether you're pursuing a career in bartending or simply seeking to enhance your hospitality skills, our hands-on training prepares you for success in the vibrant world of spirits and service.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise.

This program utilizes State-commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses, and ethics and community relations.

The Boat Manufacture and Service Technology program prepares students for employment in the manufacture and service of boats. Students learn the basics of boat design and the implementation of those designs in various components and/or complete boats or yachts.

The Business Administration program has classes available 100% online to fit your busy schedule. The Business Administration curriculum is designed to introduce students to the various aspects of the free enterprise system. Students will be provided with a fundamental knowledge of business functions, processes, and an understanding of business organizations in today’s global economy.

The Commercial Fishing Academy trains future commercial fishers to safely, legally, and sustainably enter the Commercial Fishing Industry.  The Academy includes a 48-hour classroom-based course in Morehead City, NC and a 100-hour underway apprenticeship onboard active commercial fishing vessels.

The Computer Skills and AI program offers courses designed to enhance digital literacy and explore the evolving world of artificial intelligence. Whether you're new to technology or looking to expand your expertise, our programs provide essential training in computer fundamentals, software applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and AI integration for personal and professional use. From mastering basic computer skills to understanding the practical applications of AI, our hands-on courses equip you with the knowledge and confidence to navigate today’s digital landscape.

The Construction & General Contractors program provides short-term training courses for those looking to build or advance their skills in the construction industry. Topics include Carpentry, General Contractors Continuing Education, Construction Core Skills, Blueprint Reading, Framing, and the Construction Academy.

The Detention Officer Certification Course prepares individuals for a career in correctional facilities by providing essential training in safety, supervision, and legal responsibilities. Approved by the NC Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission, this program equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in this critical role. The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment that enables students to develop manipulative skills.

The Cosmetology Instructor curriculum provides a course of study for learning the skills needed to teach the theory and practice of cosmetology as required by the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Arts. Course work requirements for becoming an instructor include introduction to teaching theory, methods and aids, practice teaching, and development of evaluation instruments.

The Criminal Justice Technology curriculum is designed to provide knowledge of criminal justice systems and operations. Studies will focus on local, state, and federal law enforcement, judicial processes, corrections, and security services. The criminal justice system’s role within society will be explored.

Emphasis is on criminal justice systems, criminology, juvenile justice, criminal and constitutional law, investigative principles, ethics, and community relations. Additional studies may include issues and concepts of government, counseling, communications, computers, and technology.

This curriculum provides specific training required to prepare students to assume positions as trained culinary professionals in a variety of food service settings including full service restaurants, hotels, resorts, clubs, catering operations, contract food service and health care facilities.

Our Dental Assistant program will help prepare you to assist in the delivery of dental treatment, perform office and laboratory procedures, and function as an integral member of a dental care team.

The Driving & Vehicle Operations Program offers short-term training courses to enhance your skills and advance your career in vehicle operations and maintenance. Topics include Escort Vehicle Operator, Auto Safety/OBD Inspection, Forklift Operator, and Commercial Driver License (CDL) training.

Carteret Community College’s Electrical & Plumbing program offers short-term training courses focused on essential skills for electrical and plumbing work in construction. Whether you’re starting a career, upgrading your skills, or preparing for licensure, this program provides the hands-on training and knowledge needed to excel in these high-demand fields.

The nationally accredited Emergency Medical Science program at Carteret CC provides the educational foundation necessary to begin a successful career in the field of emergency medical services. Upon successful completion, students are eligible for the North Carolina state paramedic exam, as well as the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed for adults whose native language is not English. Classes focus on English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. All levels are welcome - from beginning to advanced. ESL classes help individuals develop English language proficiency to get a job or promotion, assist their children with schoolwork, better understand American culture and history, and become more active in their local community.

The Esthetics Technology curriculum provides competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles and hands-on fundamentals associated with the art of skin care. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills.

The Esthetics Instructor curriculum provides a course of study covering the skills needed to teach the theory and practices of esthetics as required by the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetology. Course work includes all phases of esthetics theory laboratory instruction. Graduates should be prepared to take the North Carolina Cosmetology State Board Esthetics Instructor Licensing Exam and upon passing be qualified for employment in a cosmetology or esthetics school.

The Crystal Coast Fire Academy is an intensive 18- week long program that includes classroom and hands-on instruction to give you the skills you need to become a certified North Carolina firefighter.

In-Service Fire Training program equips active fire service professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to stay current in the field. From maintaining certifications to advancing techniques in firefighting, rescue, and safety operations, our program ensures readiness for any challenge.

Carteret Community College’s Heating & Cooling Systems (HVAC) program offers short-term training for individuals looking to enhance their skills or advance their career in the HVAC trade. With a focus on practical knowledge and hands-on experience, this program prepares students for success in installing, maintaining, and repairing heating and cooling systems in residential and commercial settings.

Placement testing, orientation and post-testing are at done on campus, but all other preparation can be done online. Online preparation provides flexible hours, uses free online materials and allows students to work at their own pace.

The Manicuring/Nail Technology continuing education program provides competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the nail technology industry. Carteret Community College’s Marine Captain & Boats Program offers a range of hands-on training courses for boating enthusiasts, aspiring captains, and marine industry professionals. Whether you're a beginner looking to navigate the Crystal Coast safely, a craftsman interested in boat building and repair, or a professional aiming to advance your maritime career, our programs provide the essential skills and certifications you need.

The Marine Propulsion System is designed to train marine technicians to service the outboard marine industry. The in-depth curriculum program is consisting of classroom instruction, laboratory exercise, and live projects to hone troubleshooting skills. Our focus includes the 2-stroke and 4-stroke outboard engine from the lower unit to the power head and how to rig the vessel when finished.

This course introduces concepts basic to the massage therapist’s role in various clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on beginning theory and techniques of bodywork as well as therapeutic touch skills.

The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures.

Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.

The Medical Office Administration curriculum prepares individuals for employment as medical administrative personnel in the areas of medical office, medical billing and coding, dental office, patient services, and medical documents.

Carteret Community College’s Natural Hair Care program provides comprehensive training in the art and science of natural hair care. Students will learn essential skills such as sanitation, bacteriology, disinfection, first aid, shampooing, draping, anatomy, and hair and scalp disorders, along with effective client consultation. Advanced techniques include twisting, wrapping, extending, locking, blow-drying, and thermal ironing.

To become a notary public in North Carolina, you must take the Notary Public Education class. Students learn the legal, ethical and procedural requirements for notaries, based on North Carolina law.

We are committed to educating entry-level nursing assistants by helping them achieve the level of knowledge, skills and abilities required to provide the basic care required by residents of long-term care facilities.

In addition to long-term care, CNA's are also hired at hospitals, home care settings, hospice, and is a prerequisite to other healthcare programs such as nursing.

The Office Administration curriculum prepares individuals for employment as administrative office personnel who use skills in the areas of office management, office finance, legal office, virtual office, customer service, and office software.

The Paralegal Technology curriculum prepares individuals to perform routine legal tasks and assist with substantive legal work under the supervision of attorneys. Although paralegals may not practice law, give legal advice, or represent clients in a court of law, they provide important legal research, writing, and office management skills to their employers. Carteret Community College offers one of only seven Paralegal Technology programs in North Carolina approved by the American Bar Association.  The program is also qualified by the North Carolina State Bar.

The Radiography curriculum prepares the graduate to be a radiographer, a skilled healthcare professional who uses radiation to produce images of the human body.

Course work includes clinical rotations to area healthcare facilities, radiographic exposure, image processing, radiographic procedures, physics, pathology, patient care and management, radiation protection, quality assurance, anatomy and physiology, and radiobiology.

Carteret Community College’s Small Engine Mechanics program provides hands-on training in engine rebuilding techniques to manufacturer specifications. Students will learn to disassemble engines, check components against specifications, and reassemble them using proper tools and testing equipment. The program emphasizes safety, operating principles, and practical skills, including adjusting valves, timing injectors, and understanding force, work, torque, and horsepower. Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to service small engines effectively and efficiently.

The Human Services Technology curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and educational services. Along with core courses, students take courses which prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas.

This program provides a comprehensive study of operative care, patient care concepts, and professional practice concepts within the profession of surgical technology. Upon completion, students should possess the clinical skills to maintain asepsis during surgery, anticipate the surgeon's needs, remain attentive to all aspects of the surgical procedure to ensure a safe environment, and knowledge necessary to obtain certification as an entry-level Surgical Technologist.

Carteret Community College’s Welding Training program offers short-term training courses designed to prepare students for entry into the workforce. Students gain hands-on experience with a variety of welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding, as well as cutting and  fabrication. Safety practices and proper equipment operation are emphasized throughout every course. Additionally, students can explore their creativity through artistic welding classes.
