Carteret Community College’s Bochnovic wins top state teaching award Cheryl Burke, Carteret County News-Times MOREHEAD CITY — Carteret Community College instructor Karen Bochnovic is now considered the top community college teacher in the state. The State Board of Community Colleges named her the winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award for 2021 Thursday. The award, sponsored by the R.J. Reynolds Foundation and established in 1985, recognizes community college faculty members who “exemplify the highest quality and standards of instruction throughout the NC Community College System,” according to the NCCCS website. Carteret Community College Good Samaritan Scholarship Established Morehead City, N.C. (January 19, 2021) – The Thomas M. Blevins Samaritan Scholarship was established by Thomas Blevins, along with support from his cousin, Rebecca Davidson. Thomas Blevins, a native of Winston-Salem, is a retired teacher from the Carteret County Public School System.  After 34 years of teaching, he knows the importance of obtaining a degree or trade skill. “Education is what helps students become productive members of our community,” says Mr. Blevins. “And shapes them to be good Samaritans.” It is Mr. Blevins’ mission to help establish the basis for students to become lifelong learners and to inspire the love of learning. Culinary Instruction During COVID Morehead City, N.C. (December 18, 2020) – In March when the Coronavirus brought all of North Carolina and much of the United States to a standstill, it was clear that the culinary and hospitality businesses would be impacted. Like the hospitality businesses, educating future hospitality and culinary arts workers was also impacted as the result of COVID. Instructors had to rethink the curriculum and even the physical way they taught their students. Now, instructors are teaching their students in a COVID-safe environment — taking temperatures at the door, wearing masks and having the students remain six-feet apart in the kitchens and classrooms. Celebrate Small Business Saturday in the Race to Shop Local Morehead City, N.C. (November 24, 2020) – November 28, 2020, is Small Business Saturday. In a typical year, the Small Business Center at Carteret Community College would celebrate Small Business Saturday by hosting Neighborhood Champion events for local businesses to provide the business owners with materials to promote #ShopSmall. Carteret CC awarded nearly $1 million USDA grant Morehead City, N.C. (October 12, 2020) – Carteret Community College (Carteret CC) was awarded $960,546 from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program. Carteret CC is one of 116 projects funded by through the USDA DLT grant program. The program helps health care and education institutions buy the equipment and software necessary to deploy distance-learning and telemedicine services to rural residents.
