Carteret CC receives $18,000 for short-term workforce scholarships Morehead City, N.C. (September 25, 2020) – Carteret Community College (Carteret CC) received $18,000 from the SECU Foundation to award $500 scholarships to students. The grant is part of SECU Foundation’s Bridge to Career Program Cohort. In 2018, SECU Foundation established the SECU Bridge to Career Program to help remove financial barriers for students seeking to obtain state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials through the Workforce Continuing Education Division of their local Community College that lead to sustainable wage careers within their local communities. MAPS Center finds new home on Carteret CC campus Morehead City, N.C. (September 18, 2020) – The Mentoring, Advising and Planning for Success (MAPS) Center at Carteret Community College recently moved from the McGee Building to the Smith Building where the campus library is housed. The MAPS Center provides academic advising and career planning services to its students. In addition, students can receive academic tutoring through the MAPS Center, and the faculty can receive advisor training. “We are excited to have the MAPS Center. Harker Named to Inaugural NC Black Entrepreneurship Council Morehead City, N.C. (September 14, 2020) – Perry Harker, Vice President of Corporate and Community Education at Carteret Community College is among 25 individuals recently named as a member of the inaugural NC IDEA Foundation’s North Carolina Black Entrepreneurship Council (NC BEC). NC IDEA, a Durham-based private foundation committed to supporting entrepreneurial ambition and economic empowerment in North Carolina, announced the formation of the NC BEC. Carteret CC Reaffirmed by SACSCOC Morehead City, N.C. (September 4, 2020) – At its annual meeting on September 3, the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) reaffirmed Carteret Community College’s accreditation for another 10 years. SACSCOC is an institutional accrediting agency for degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states, including North Carolina, and is recognized by the United States Department of Education. Colleges accredited by SACSCOC are required to undergo a reaffirmation process every 10 years, with an interim report due after five years. Improvement Training to Local Companies Daniel Berman, Safety Director and Compliance Officer at Veneer Tech, recently completed his Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt training through Carteret Community College’s Customized Training Program. Berman completed his training online and at no cost to him or his employer. Since completing his training, 11 additional Veneer Tech employees have completed process improvement training. Veneer Tech worked with Carteret Community College’s Customized Training Program to offer the Lean Six Sigma and Fundamentals of Problem Solving programs to their employees. Funding received for job training and career services Carteret Community College and Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board received $523,482 from a federally-funded program called the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA). The funding will be used to assist individuals in gaining and/or maintaining employment and increasing their earnings. The WIOA program offers tuition assistance for curriculum programs and training assistance for short-term training programs that lead directly to jobs identified as “in demand” in the labor market. Training programs can include classroom and online training, on-the-job training, internships, or apprenticeships. The WIOA program offers various employment services such as assistance with job leads and labor market information, resume assistance, education and career assessments, employment readiness and job search workshops, career counseling and career planning, supportive services, and intensive job search assistance. Carteret CC receives $1.4 million grant Carteret Community College is the recipient of the U.S. Department of Education Student Support Services TRIO multi-year grant. The College will receive $294,725 each year for five years totaling $1,473,625 to fund its Student Support Services TRiO program. Carteret Community College was one of approximately 1,100 institutions nationwide that were awarded grant funding. The TRiO program is designed to provide opportunities for academic development, assist with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward successful completion of their post-secondary education. The goal of the TRiO program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. Overall Named 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar Landon Overall from Carteret Community College is one of 207 Phi Theta Kappa members across the nation named a 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 nations, with approximately 240,000 active members in the nation’s colleges.
