ACE Health Coach

This course is designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills in preparation for a national certification exam in health coaching. Topics include effective coach-to-client communication techniques; behavioral, nutritional, and physiological sciences (particularly as they relate to the obese client); screening and assessment; guidelines for designing and implementing safe, effective, and purposeful exercise programs; and the legal, professional, and roles of the health coach. Barber School

Consisting of theory and practice, this course is designed to train students in cutting hair, shaving, basic trims, facial and scalp treatments as well as maintaining tools and equipment, operating and practicing the legality of standards, safety, and sanitation of the work area. BLS Provider CPR

This American Heart Association course teaches CPR skills to use with victims of all ages, use of an automated external defibrillator and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction. It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients. NOTE: The book, “AHA BLS Provider Manuel”, can be purchased from the college bookstore prior to the day of class. ECG/Cardiac Monitor Technician

The Cardiac Monitor Technician (sometimes called a Telemetry or Cardiac Monitor Technician) is responsible for on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and provides RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. The technician delivers telemetry to intermediate units and performs monitor hook-up/discharge, patient preparation, and teaching related to the monitor. In addition to cardiac monitoring skills, the course will cover Capnography (CO2 monitoring) and 12 lead EKG skills. Textbook: eBook provided by instructor.

Emergency Medical Technician Initial (Hybrid)

(Hours: Online 112, Onsite 80, Clinical 48) Designed to train individuals to become emergency medical personnel, this course teaches patient assessment and basic life support techniques including airway management and CPR; hemorrhage control; oxygen administration; shock; bandaging and splinting; skull, spine, and chest injuries; child birthing; exposure to cold and heat; and transferring patients to medical facilities.

The EMS Program at Carteret Community College (CCC) is accredited by the N.C. Office of EMS and is approved by the N.C. Community College System to offer EMS education courses. The CCC EMT programs meet the current standards of the NC OEMS and 2009 DOT/NHTSA national education standards EMT curriculum.

Massage Therapy I

This course introduces concepts basic to the role of the massage therapist in a variety of clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on beginning theory and techniques of body work as well as skill in therapeutic touch. Prepares graduates to work in direct client care settings to provide manipulation, methodical pressure, friction and kneading of the body for maintaining wellness or treating alterations in wellness throughout the lifespan. Medical Coding Professional

The Medical Coder is responsible for assigning the correct diagnosis and procedure codes, entering the necessary information into the patient’s account and submitting the claims to the insurance companies. Certified coders earn approximately 20% more than their non-certified counterparts, with certified professional. This program can lead to the national Certified Professional Coder® (CPC) certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential is the gold standard for medical coding. You will need to have access to the internet to complete this class.

This course provides training in the skills required to work in a medical front office. Medical Insurance and Billing

Medical Insurance Billers translate a healthcare service into a billing claim. They take the medical codes, enter them into the billing software, and then submit the claim to the payer (insurance company) to be paid. Medical billing specialists have a daily interaction with both patients and insurance companies to ensure claims are paid on time. When paired with Professional Medical Coding, students may wish to pursue national certification through the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) to become a Certified Professional Biller (CPB). Medical Lab Assistant

This course is designed to teach core clinical laboratory skills. The curriculum will focus on basic laboratory methods in quality control, quality assurance, information recording and transfer, normal and abnormal laboratory values, and problem recognition. The volume of laboratory tests continues to increase with both population growth and the development of new types of tests. Optional Certified Medical Lab Assistant National Certification exam will be administered at the end of the course for an additional fee. Successful completion of this course guarantees acceptance in the Phlebotomy program as long as student meets the Phlebotomy enrollment requirements. When paired with the Phlebotomy and Lab Services course, students gain the hours and clinical time needed to sit for the AMT medical lab assistant exam.

Medication Aide

Prepares students to safely administer medications with emphasis on the 6 Rights of Medication Administration and documentation on the MAR (Medication Administration Record) to include routine and PRN (as needed) medications by various routes, IV and injectable medications are not part of this course. Successful participants will receive a certificate of completion and will be able to apply for the North Carolina exam administered by Credentia 365 to be listed on the N.C. Medication Aide Registry. Nail Technology I & II

The Manicuring/Nail Technology continuing education program provides competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the nail technology industry. The program offers a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills.

Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional nail technology, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other related topics. Students must meet the NC Board of Cosmetic Arts Manicure/Nail Technology 300 clock-hour/performance requirements and complete Nail Technology I and Nail Technology II courses to successfully complete the Manicure/Nail Technology Program. This program typically takes 16 weeks to complete

Graduates should be prepared to take the North Carolina Cosmetology State Board Licensing Exam after successful completion of both Nail Technology I & II. Upon passing the state exam, graduates will be state licensed and qualify for employment in beauty and nail salons, as a platform artist, and in related businesses.

Nursing Aide I (CNA I)

Our classes offer hands-on clinical experience to better prepare one to work as a professional nurse assistant with confidence. Students will complete a total of 176 hours inclusive of online, laboratory and clinical simulation experience consistent with the standards of practice as directed by the North Carolina Division of Health and Human Services encompassing the knowledge and skills required under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA). Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination for listing on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry. There is an additional cost for this test of $140.00 to be paid when registering online for the computer based written and skills examination. NOTE: To register for a Nurse Aide I class, you will need to sign up and attend orientation, print the Nurse Aide Information packet and complete the Nurse Aide application. After completion of the orientation, you may bring your application and payment to the Continuing Education office to be registered for class.

Nursing Aide I Orientation

Prior to attending orientation, you will need to print the Nurse Aide packet below or pick one up from the Corporate and Community Education office,  and sit for a TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) reading test unless a degree or college entrance exam has been completed. Social Security card and valid government ID are required the first day of class. You will register and pay $246.80 for the CNA I class of your choice after you have attended an online orientation if all paperwork is complete.

Nursing Aide II (CNA II)

Prepares students to perform more complex skills in caring for the patient as required by the N.C. Board of Nursing (BON). Students must have a high school diploma or GED and have successfully completed Nurse Aide I and be currently on the Nurse Aide I registry before they are allowed to enroll in Nurse Aide II. Upon successful completion, the graduate may apply for certification through the N.C. Board of Nursing. NOTE: To register for a Nurse Aide II class, print the Nurse Aide II packet and complete the Nurse Aide II application. Once all requirements are met, you may bring your completed application and payment to the Continuing Education office to be registered for class.

Nursing Aide II Competency Assessment

The Nurse Aide Competency assessment program is available only for those Nurse Aide II’s who have an expired Nurse Aide II listing, currently on Nurse Aide I registry and meet all eligibility requirements in # 8 prerequisites competency assessment. All of the Nurse Aide II skills identified on the Nurse Aide II task list will be reviewed, assessed and successfully completed for the Nurse Aide II to be determined competent in the required complex nursing skills in caring for the patient according to the current teaching modules and skills checklists by the North Carolina Board of Nursing with emphasis on sterile technique, wound care, elimination, catheter care, ostomy care, irrigation and removal of fecal impaction, oxygenation including suctioning and trach care, alternate feeding nutrition such as G-tube feeding, etc. , peripheral iv assistive activities and Finger Stick glucose monitoring. Paramedic: Section 1 (Web Supported)

Designed to train individuals to become a Paramedic, this course teaches advanced life support techniques including advanced airway management, advanced pharmacology, advanced cardiac life support, advanced medical life support, prehospital trauma life support, pediatric advanced life support, and operations.

The EMS Program at Carteret Community College (CCC) is accredited by the N.C. Office of EMS and is approved by the N.C. Community College System to offer EMS education courses. The CCC EMT programs meet the current standards of the NC OEMS and 2009 DOT/NHTSA national education standards EMT curriculum.

This course is Section 1 of 4 and runs from January 10, 2022 through May 1, 2022. The complete Paramedic course which begins Monday, January 10, 2022, will end May 9, 2023. The class will be presented in a web-supported format which will require you to complete weekly online assignments. The on-site lab sessions are 100 percent mandatory and will be held at Carteret Community College unless otherwise noted by your instructor.

Peer Support Specialist (PSS)

This course is based on the Recovery Can Happen, a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (NCCPSS) training curriculum written by Terri Spears, MS, LCAS, Recovery Coach, NCCPSS. Recovery Can Happen NCCPSS training is designed to equip participants with a clear knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of a PSS, how to work with a team, navigate systems, resolve conflict, adhere to ethics and agency standards, all while modeling that Recovery CAN Happen and offering living hope to those with substance use disorder and/or mental health concerns. More than simply lecture and Q&A, Recovery Can Happen training is alive and participatory. Terri has developed a training curriculum considering various learning styles that is interactive, engaging, and energizing. This is a 40-hour training delivered by the developer as primary facilitator.

Personal Trainer (ACSM)

Course helps you prepare to become a Certified Personal Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Learn how to implement training plans using well developed programming methods to enhance muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition and more. The instructor is a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, AFPA Nutrition & Wellness Consultant, NAMPFT Personal Trainer, Madd Dog Athletics certified, and has a Masters in the Science of Sports Medicine. This is a HYBRID class, so you must have internet access. Class meets Monday through Friday, the first week, then meets once a week on Wednesdays, 6:15 – 9:15 pm and the last Saturday of each month from 8 am-5 pm. Students should have regular access to the internet to take the class and should expect to spend 10 hours per week outside of the regular classroom completing online instruction.

Phlebotomy Technician

Learn to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection. Includes lecture, lab and clinical hours. Upon completion, students are urged to seek Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification through the Association of Clinical Pathology. For additional training and certification, students should consider taking the Medical Lab Assistant course. Phlebotomy Technician Refresher

This course introduces the student to the basic principles of venipuncture, including collection procedures, infection control and universal precautions, specimen transportation, quality control procedures, and basic blood tests. Physical Therapy Technician

Physical Therapy Technicians are responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering devices and supplies, and transporting patients working under the direction of the therapist. The Physical Therapy Technician aids in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. Technicians may be employed in therapy offices, nursing homes, hospitals, sports rehabilitation centers and some orthopedic clinics.

Sterile Processing

Prepares students for work in the field of surgical disinfection and sterilization. Students will learn instrument identification and the proper set-up and preparation of instruments needed for surgery. Students that complete the program will be eligible to sit for the national Sterile Processing & Distribution (SPD) Technician Certification exam. Veterinary Assistant

This course prepares individuals to assist in a veterinarian practice. Topics include veterinary terminology, anatomy and physiology, proper handling and restraining of animals, obtaining and handling specimens, emergency care, nursing skills, pre-surgical skills, post-operative skills, and pharmacy skills.
