Able Seaman

The Able Seaman course is a USCG approved course necessary for all seafaring mariners to work on the decks of large commercial vessels (NC Ferry Division, Tugs & Freighters). Upon completion of the subject matter and demonstrating proficiency through a written examination, the student should be knowledgeable of: Performing all duties and responsibilities of the Able Seaman in a safe, efficient manner in accordance with the rules of good seamanship. The course will ensure that students are cognizant of the regulations and their responsibilities regarding safety, protection of the environment and the Rules of the Road. This course is part “A” of the training/qualifications needed to apply to the USCG for the Able Seaman Rating. To qualify for an “AB Special” rating, applicants must have a minimum of 360 days of sea service and qualify as a Lifeboatman/Lifeboatman Limited. *This course does not provide sea time nor does it include Lifeboatman/Lifeboatman Limited.*

ABYC: American Boat and Yacht Council Systems Course

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) Systems certification teaches you how to design, maintain, install and repair marine systems with the confidence you need to succeed in today’s marine industry. The ABYC Systems certification is the gold standard within the industry addressing air conditioning, water systems, sanitation, fuel systems, controls, electrical installations, and more. TheABYC is a non-profit, member organization that develops voluntary global safety standards for the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of recreational boats. Crystal Coast & The Blue Economy

Join this exploration of The Crystal Coast to discover the area’s unique blend of water, the evolving environment, and economic empowerment opportunities in the emerging Blue Economy.
The class is open to interested community members, particularly small business owners, property owners, local government officials, real estate agents, developers, agricultural interests, aquaculturists, and fisher folk (harvesting shrimp, oysters, crab, clams as commercial fishing or small family-run businesses).

Traditional Wood Skiff - Boat Building Academy

This course will instruct students to build a Traditional Downeast Wood Skiff. The students will build a skiff using traditional materials and techniques. The course will take the student thru the process of using basic hand and power tools to transform raw lumber to a seaworthy 15-18ft skiff.  The students will be divided into 2-3 student teams, with each team building a boat.  The students will learn the history and design of the Downeast Skiff.  They will learn basic shop safety and wood tool use. The students will learn lumber selection, lumber dressing and proper cutting techniques to create frames, and construct the skiff, fair the hull and paint the hull.

Wood Shop - Boat Building Academy

This course will instruct students in wood boat construction techniques, fundamentals of wood and woodworking tools, shop safety, and workplace success. Students will utilize traditional hand tools along with modern power tools to shape and fasten wood in a variety of shapes using multiple techniques. This short term training will give an overview of the boat building processes and will provide pipeline training to students seeking employment in a custom boat building facility. Living Shorelines

The Living Shoreline Academy will serve as an introduction to living shorelines.  Students will learn about living shoreline theory, construction and permitting processes.  Students will learn in the classroom and tour the various types of living shoreline on campus and neighboring waterfront facilities.  This course will consist of two sessions.  A classroom presentation on Wednesday evening and on the Shoreline on Saturday morning (weather permitting).

Marine Captain’s Licensing (OUPV)

Provides training to mariners seeking their US Coast Guard Operators License as Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) upon Great Lakes, Inland and/or Near Coastal waters as specified in 46 CFR Part 10. Course prepares students for the USCG examination given at Carteret Community College or a USCG Regional Examination Center (REC).

Ideally, students taking this course should have completed a minimum of one year underway on vessels with 90 days of that experience acquired during the three years prior to enrollment. Class includes CPR/First Aid certification. Required: Student must have picture identification at registration.

Upon successful completion of our OUPV License class, the student receives a certificate which, with the complete application, may be submitted to the USCG for the OUPV License. Carteret Community College wants to make sure that all students signing up for the OUPV class understand the USCG requirements for the license. If you have any questions regarding license requirements or have any unusual health issues, we recommend you visit the USCG/National Maritime Center web site at www.uscg.mil/nmc or call 1-888-427-5662 to ensure that you are qualified to hold the license.

Evening Classes run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm-9pm  

10 Day Classes run Monday-Friday for two weeks from 8am-5pm 

Weekend classes consist of three consecutive weekends, 3 Fridays, 3 Saturdays & 3 Sundays, 9 days total, from 8am-5pm

Modern Woodworking with CAD/CNC

The course will instruct students on the operation of a modern Computer Navigated Cutting (CNC) machine while utilizing Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software. Students will have the opportunity to design and build custom parts and signs of their choice. The course will walk the students thru CNC equipment setup, alignment, maintenance, basic CAD instruction and CNC operating procedures.

Outboard Engine Maintenance

The Outboard Engine Maintenance course will cover routine maintenance needed to keep modern 4 stroke outboard engines performing at their best. This short course will cover oil and filter changes, lower unit gear case oil, impeller replacement, spark plugs and other components which should be checked and/or changed regularly.

One student boat may be utilized to demonstrate the proper techniques and procedures, ultimately getting their maintenance performed during the class. Please let the coordinator, Scott Leahy at leahys@carteret.edu know if you would like for your boat to be used.

Safe Boating Classes

Carteret Community College has partnered with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the America’s Boating Club to present two excellent options for Safe Boating courses.  Both courses cover the following: Boat Selection, rules of the road, aids to navigation, safety, required equipment.  The courses meet Federal regulations and the NC State Requirements for those born 1/1/98 and later. Women on the Water

This course is designed to introduce or enhance the boating experience for women. Offered in four sessions; each three hour session is independent so you may sign up for one or all four. Katrina Smith is the instructor. Students will become familiar with the standard practices.

Session 3 – Knots, Docking, & Anchoring
Session 4 – Boat Maintenance

Note: No hands on trailering in this class. Please Note: Participants must be 16 years old or older.
