Carteret County Community College is updating its procedures for managing COVID-19 infections and exposures as of February 1, 2023.   We are relaxing our reporting protocols to ensure consistency with NCDHHS and CDC guidance.

As we move into the next phase, to continue to protect the health and safety of our employees and students we want to emphasize:

If you are sick, please stay home. Call your doctor or clinic for medical advice.

 

The following protocol apply to both employees and students:

  1. For people who are well, wearing masks on campus remains optional.  Carteret CC is a mask-friendly environment.  If you prefer to wear a mask in any situation or all situations, please do so.
  2. People who test positive for COVID-19 must quarantine away from campus for 5 days.  They should also contact medical professional about the use of antiviral drugs which may lessen the severity and length of illness.  COVID-positive individuals may return to campus or class after 5 days if they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without taking fever-reducing medicines. They must continue to wear a mask in all group settings for another 5 days after returning to campus. Click on this CDC website link for additional COVID isolation guidance.
  3. Students must tell their faculty members that they have tested positive for COVID-19 and must quarantine for 5 days.  Faculty and staff must inform their immediate supervisors of a positive COVID-19 test and must quarantine for 5 days.
  4. People who are exposed to a person with COVID-19 should wear a mask when around others on or off campus for 10 days.  They should take a COVID-19 test 5 days after the exposure; sooner only if they experience symptoms.
  5. The College will no longer track campus wide reporting or engage in contact tracing of either students or faculty/staff who are exposed to or infected with COVID-19. The virus is widespread, making contact tracing ineffective.

Can I still come to class or work if I have tested positive?

No.  You will need to isolate for 5 days followed by mask wearing for an additional 5 days.  It is recommended that you contact your doctor for medical advice and treatment.  You may obtain additional isolation guidance from the CDC at this link.

I have been exposed to a known positive case, should I stay home?

No.  If you are asymptomatic you will need to wear a mask around others for ten days, monitor your symptoms, and test within five days; earlier if you develop symptoms.  If you are symptomatic, you should remain off campus and get tested.  You may also want to contact your doctor for additional guidance and review the CDC guidance for exposure.

I don’t have any at-home tests. What are my options?

There are several sources for free at-home tests.

I can’t find a place to test.

I have a question about getting an initial vaccine or a booster.

Carteret Community College continues to encourage vaccination as public health officials have determined that this is the best way to protect yourself from severe illness.  To obtain a vaccine or booster you can contact your local pharmacy or health department.

Will my instructor count the absence against me?

Your instructor communicates the class attendance policy at the beginning of each semester.  Please review this information and discuss absences with your instructor, as well as ways to remain current with your studies.

I am an employee and want to know how I will get paid while I stay home.

If you are sick, you need to stay home to prevent spreading COVID or any other contagious disease.  You should consult with your supervisor to determine if remote work is available, provided you are well enough to work.  If you are unable to work, you will need to use your own accrued paid leave, or take leave without pay if you do not have any available leave.  You will report this per the normal leave reporting process with your supervisor and the monthly leave form.
