EMERGENCY MEDICAL SCIENCE

The nationally accredited Emergency Medical Science program at Carteret CC provides the educational foundation necessary to begin a successful career in the field of emergency medical services. Upon successful completion, students are eligible for the North Carolina state paramedic exam, as well as the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians

Paramedic students will acquire the necessary information and skills needed to manage critically ill or injured patients in the pre-hospital setting. Students will learn skills such as: patient assessment, endotracheal intubation, surgical airway placement, EKG defibrillation, intravenous(IV) access, and medication administration.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES, EFFECTIVENESS, AND ACCREDITATION

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Throughout the EMS program, three domains of learning are taught and evaluated by the faculty.

In order to successfully complete the program and be eligible to sit for the state paramedic exam, students must display competency in each of these learning domains.

Each student will have a terminal competency form that will be signed by the program medical director and the program chairperson once they have successfully completed the program. Failure to display competency in any or all of these domains will result in program removal or an unsuccessful attempt at program completion.

1: Cognitive Domain
Students will demonstrate the knowledge of a competent entry-level paramedic.

2: Psychomotor Domain
Students will demonstrate the skills of a competent entry-level paramedic.

3: Affective Domain
Students will demonstrate the behaviors of a competent entry-level paramedic.

PROGRAM EFFECTIVENESS MEASURES

Retention

The paramedic program has a retention benchmark of 70% and it is measured annually.

State Written Exam Pass Rate

The National Registry (written and/or practical) Threshold set by the National Registry or State Exam (written and/or practical) threshold set by the State is 70%. The success of any results will be computed over the most recent reporting year (2017) based on the total number of completing the program.

Job Placement Rate

The Positive (Job) Placement threshold set by the CoAEMSP is 70%. Positive (Job) Placement means that the graduate is employed full or part-time or volunteers in the profession or in a related field; continuing his/her education; or is serving in the military.

Graduate Satisfaction Rating

For each group of graduating students within 6-12 months after graduation using the CoAEMSP required graduate survey items.

Employer Satisfaction Rating

For each group of graduating students, programs are required to conduct surveys of those graduates and the employers of those graduates within 6-12 months after graduation using the CoAEMSP required employer survey items.
