The Golden LEAF Scholars Program-Two-Year Colleges assists students and their families with the costs associated with higher education. The grant will assist selected students with scholarships to help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, credentialing tests, transportation, and childcare. The goal is to assist the citizens of North Carolina who reside in rural counties designated as tobacco dependent and/or economically distressed communities by providing financial assistance to aid their educational and training endeavors. Golden LEAF Scholars Program-Two-Year Colleges provides financial support for North Carolinians seeking to improve the economic situation of their families through enrollment in training for specific employment (continuing education students). The maximum for continuing education students is $250 per term.

Occupational continuing education students must demonstrate a financial need and be enrolled in a career pathways program or a course that is scheduled for at least 96 hours and leads to a state or industry-recognized credential.

Carteret Community College was awarded $130,822 from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund. These funds, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, are to be utilized by Sept. 30, 2022, and will go toward scholarships for eligible students.

The GEER Fund is part of the GEER Scholarship Program to provide local educational agencies, institutions of higher education and other education-related entities with emergency assistance for issues resulting from COVID-19.

This program provides scholarships for eligible community college students who are in the workforce continuing education and pursuing high demand workforce training programs within 10 pathways that lead to a state or industry-recognized credential.

The pathways include Automotive, Aircraft Maintenance, Construction, Criminal Justice, Emergency Medical Services, Fire and Rescue Services, Healthcare, Industrial/Manufacturing, Information Technology and Transportation. In addition to the broad career pathways, other programs included under the funding is Commercial Driver License, Welding, Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Basic, EMS Paramedic, Nurse Aide 1 and Nurse Aide 2, Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technician, Sterile Processing, Fire Academy, Marine Trades and Boat Building Academy.

Scholarships are awarded based on student needs, the local industry needs, the number of eligible students, and the cost of the course, up to a maximum of either $750 per course or the cost of course fees if it exceeds $750. Scholarships help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, credentialing tests, transportation, childcare, and other components as deemed necessary.

The Short-Term Workforce Development (STWD) Grant Program, established by Session Law 2021-180, is a state-funded financial aid program for eligible Workforce Continuing Education (WCE) students pursuing high-demand, family-sustaining wage credentials identified as N.C. Workforce Credentials at either the Essential or Career level. These credential pathways may consist of a single WCE course or a series of courses. In 2018, the SECU Foundation established the SECU Bridge to Career Cohort Program.  Designed to help remove financial barriers for students seeking to obtain state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials that lead to sustainable wage careers within their local communities, the SECU Foundation annually will provide a total of 30 (thirty) $500 scholarships to all participating community colleges.  Courses available this year for these scholarships are:  Medical Terminology, Medical Insurance and Billing, Professional Medical Coding, Truck Driver Training (CDL), and Welding.

Student Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship program, an individual must:

• Be a U.S. citizen and a North Carolina resident.
• Be in one of the following target groups: unemployed & underemployed adults, members of the NC National Guard, military veterans & spouses, or underserved populations in a specific workforce sector or area.
• Be enrolled in a short-term training program 96-hours or more that leads to a state-regulated or industry-recognized credential and is offered through Continuing Education.
• Not be a Director, employee or family member of an employee of the State Employees’ Credit Union or SECU Foundation.
• Preference is given to students with limited or no access to financial aid from other programs.
• Students should only be awarded one (1) CE SECU Foundation scholarship within a funding year.

The Tyler Dees Captain’s License Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Tyler David Dees. This scholarship will help future mariner students who are seeking the training to obtain their U.S. Coast Guard Operator’s License.

Student Eligibility – Any US Citizen over the age of 18

Established to assist youth, adults, and dislocated workers in retraining and obtaining employment, WIOA offers a mix of employment, training, and job placement services. Participants may access Individual Training Accounts to assist with tuition, fees, books, supplies, and accident insurance. On-the-Job Training contracts may be available for suitable candidates.
