Veteran Student Success Center

Veterans returning to college often face unique challenges. Statistics show that the best way to ensure graduation numbers are strong among veterans is to guarantee that plenty of support is provided when they re-enter the educational institution.

Our mission is to ensure all military-affiliated students at Carteret are aware of their veteran benefits, are advised of all available resources related to their needs, and are provided the guidance and support necessary for a successful transition and enriched educational experience.

What’s Included

Located on the first floor of the Bryant Student Center, the Veteran Student Success Center (VSSC) was beautifully remodeled and specifically designated as a place for veterans to relax, converse, and connect with other veterans.

Amenities include:

• Computer workstations
• Free printing
• Television
• Kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave
• Million-dollar view of Bogue Sound

Saturday–Sunday: Closed

Tuition & Fees

In most cases, you must pay tuition and fees when you register. Contact the Veterans Certifying Official before your tuition deadline to confirm.

Please note: Students using the Post-9/11 GI Bill® must submit a Certificate of Eligibility. Upon receipt, tuition and fees will be paid by the VA. All other VA Chapters must either have a financial aid award, set up a payment plan, or pay out of pocket by the published deadline.

VA Benefits Eligibility

Using VA education benefits comes with a few important responsibilities. Follow these guidelines to help maintain your eligibility and avoid delays, overpayments, or changes to your benefits.

Stay on Track Academically

Continue making academic progress toward completing your degree, diploma, or certificate. If you also receive federal financial aid, you must meet Carteret's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements.

Take Courses Required for Your Program

VA education benefits generally cover courses that are required for your approved program of study, including approved electives and prerequisites.

Planning to transfer? Meet with Carteret's Veterans Certifying Official to make sure your program and course selections support your transfer goals and meet VA requirements.

Tell Us Before You Add, Drop, or Withdraw From a Class

Your enrollment affects your VA education benefits. Contact the Veterans Certifying Official as soon as possible if you add, drop, or withdraw from a course.

Changes to your enrollment may affect your benefits and could result in an overpayment that must be repaid to the VA. You are responsible for reviewing the enrollment information certified to the VA and resolving any overpayments.

Changing Your Major or Program?

If you change your major or program of study, or transfer from another school, you may need to update your information with the VA.

• Veterans should complete VA Form 22-1995.
• Eligible dependents should complete VA Form 22-5495.

Contact the Veterans Certifying Official if you are unsure which form or next step applies to you.

Called to Active Duty?

If you are called to active duty during the semester, contact Carteret as soon as possible so we can help you navigate your next steps.

• Contact the Registrar's Office for information about withdrawing from your courses.
• Contact the Financial Aid Office if you receive financial aid.
• Contact the Veterans Certifying Official if you are using VA education benefits.

Need Short-Term Military Leave?

If military service or training will require you to miss class for a short period of time, contact your instructors as soon as you know about the absence. Your instructors can work with you to determine appropriate accommodations.

Repeating a Course

If you fail a course or receive a grade that does not meet the requirements of your program, you may be able to repeat the course and continue receiving VA education benefits for it.

Courses that you have already successfully completed generally cannot be certified again for VA education benefits.
