Carteret CC awards 2020 Dr. Joseph T. Barwick Civic Award
Carteret Community College announced that the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is the recipient of the 2020 Dr. Joseph T. Barwick Civic Award. Each year for more than a decade, the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees has awarded the Dr. Joseph T. Barwick Civic Award to a Carteret County resident who has shown the highest level of dedication to community service.
“This year, the Board of Trustees has elected to recognize the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament for its sustained dedication to our community,” said Michael Curtis, Carteret Community College Board of Trustees Chairman. “Each year the Big Rock Board of Directors’ and its Charity Committee receives countless applications from Carteret County charities and organizations. The committee labors through those applications and donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to the charities that are most in need.” The Board’s Charity Committee is comprised of Tom Bennett, Dale Britt, Richard Crowe, Curtis Strange and Caroline Petrilli.
Since 1986, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has donated more than $6 million to Carteret County organizations. Its contributions touch every area of this community and make Carteret County a better place. The Carteret Community College Board of Trustees wanted to recognize the tournament’s contribution to our community.
The Big Rock Blue Marlin and the Keli Wagner Big Rock Lady Angler Tournaments have been major contributors to:
- Carteret Health Care
- North Carolina Symphony Carteret County
- Carobell, Inc. Station Club Enterprise
- Hope Mission
- North Carolina State University Center for Marine Science and Technology
- Take a Kid Fishing Foundation
- Martha’s Mission Cupboard
- History Museum of Carteret County
- The Broad Street Clinic
- Boy Scouts of America East Carolina Council
- Carteret Community College
“There is no other charity that serves the people of Carteret County as selflessly and generously as the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament,” said Curtis. “For its ongoing generosity to the community, the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees proudly presents the 2020 Dr. Joseph A. Barwick Award to the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.”
