Adult High School
Program Overview
The Adult High School (AHS) program at Carteret Community College provides adults and eligible 16- and 17-year-old students with the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma at no cost. Students complete required high school coursework in a flexible, supportive learning environment designed to fit their individual needs and schedules. Graduates receive an Adult High School Diploma issued jointly by Carteret Community College and the Carteret County Board of Education—the equivalent of a traditional high school diploma. Along the way, students gain the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to pursue college, workforce training, military service, or rewarding careers.
Requesting Transcripts
Students may request their Adult High School transcripts by submitting the request below.
Program Requirements
- Students must be at least 16 years old to enroll in any class.
- Students must attend orientation.
- Parent/Legal guardian must attend the first 30 minutes of orientation with student.
Attendance Expectations
Regular attendance is essential to successful completion of the Adult High School (AHS) program. AHS courses are structured around a required number of instructional hours, students must meet the minimum attendance requirement to remain enrolled and earn credit. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70 instructional hours during the course/session. Students are responsible for monitoring their attendance and completing the required hours within the scheduled course period.
All missed instructional time counts toward the student's total absences. Medical appointments, illness, medical/doctor's notes, family emergencies, work conflicts, transportation issues, and other personal circumstances do not constitute excused absences for purposes of meeting the 70-hour attendance requirement.
While students are encouraged to communicate with AHS staff regarding circumstances that may affect their attendance, documentation such as a doctor's or medical note does not restore missed instructional hours or exempt the student from the 70-hour requirement.
Students who do not accumulate at least 70 hours of attendance by the end of the designated course/session may be withdrawn from the AHS program and/or may not receive credit for the course, regardless of the reason for the missed hours.

Steps to Register
Step 1: Register for Orientation
Select an available session to attend the mandatory AHS Orientation with the link provided below.
Step 2: Provide Documentation
Documents that must be brought to the mandatory orientation:
- Social Security or Tax ID card (signed) (copies not accepted). If you do not have access to one of these items, you may still be eligible to participate. Call us at (252) 222-6195 for information.
- Government or state issued photo ID (no school or work ID’s accepted)
- Sealed Official High School Transcript from last high school attended (If there is not a transcript available, student will start classes with 0 credits.)
Step 3: Minors (ages 16 & 17)
Minor students aged 16 or 17 attending orientation must:
- Provide Picture ID with date of birth and signature
- Provide Social Security card
- Be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian
- Provide proof of high school withdrawal OR an official school withdrawal form
- Minors who:
- Separated from high school less than six (6) months ago - Provide an approved “Application to Attend Carteret CC Basic Skills Program” packet from their local high school OR
- Separated from high school six (6) months or more - Provide a Minor Release Form
