Surgical Technician

This program provides a comprehensive study of operative care, patient care concepts, and professional practice concepts within the profession of surgical technology. Topics include preoperative, perioperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care and preparation. Upon completion, students should possess the clinical skills to maintain asepsis during surgery, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, remain attentive to all aspects of the surgical procedure to ensure a safe environment, and knowledge necessary to obtain certification as an entry-level Surgical Technologist.

About the Program

Prerequisites

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age
  2. Must complete a Surgical Technology Information Session and submit confirmation documentation
  3. Must meet with the Surgical Technology program chair
  4. Must have current CPR certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) before the first day of class
  5. Complete background check and drug screen prior within 3 weeks of starting the program
  6. Required documentation of immunizations or exemptions for clinical rotations

The Carteret Community College’s Surgical Technology Program is 568 hours. This is a hybrid program, consisting of online lecture, classroom lecture, classroom laboratory, and clinical instruction. Clinical experiences are obtained through hospital settings. In all clinical settings, students will work under the direction and supervision of designated surgical services employees.

Upon satisfactory completion of the Surgical Technology program, the graduate is eligible to take the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) exam. The exam fee is $199.00.
