Sandi Malone Memorial Scholarship Endowment Established

Sandi Malone Scholarship Check PresentationMorehead City, N.C. (February 16, 2021) –At the February Board of Trustees meeting, Mr. Lynn Eury presented the Board with a $10,000 check establishing the Sandi Malone Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Longtime friends, Mr. Eury wished to remember Sandi by establishing a scholarship to support students in the Horticulture Technology program at Carteret Community College because of her love for gardening.

“I prefer to think of my charitable contributions as investments rather than simply as a gift,” said Mr. Lynn Eury. “When funds associated with a gift are spent much of the impact is gone. In the case of this endowment, established in memory of Sandi Malone, Sandi will be remembered in perpetuity for her positive impacts on Carteret County.”

Sandi’s talents encompassed much more than just a bountiful summer garden. She was involved in artistries including needlework, pottery, woodworking, and pine needle basketry, which she taught at the Beaufort Historical Association. Sandi also dedicated her time to the Arts Council of Carteret County and Carteret Community Theatre.

The scholarship will benefit Carteret CC students in the Horticulture Technology program who maintain a 3.0 GPA and reside in Carteret County. The program focuses on the general production and management of cultivating plants, shrubs, flowers, foliage, trees, and groundcover. Students also learn technical and business operations associated with horticulture services.

“Students, as well as the entire community, will benefit from the scholarship awards, not gifts,” said Mr. Eury. “For the scholarship is intended to prepare the student to better serve the entire community. Students who complete degrees in programs that serve the community are much more likely to remain here and make Carteret County a better place for all citizens to live.”

Donations to the Sandi Malone Memorial Scholarship can be made through the Carteret CC Foundation by mail, online at www.carteret.edu/foundation, or by calling (252) 222-6262.
