Skye Miller

Meet Skye Miller

Skye MillerOriginally from Connecticut, Skye Miller admits she was never a “star” student. She had an attitude and a tendency to try every teacher’s patience. After moving to Carteret County to live with her grandparents, Skye decided to complete her high school education through the Adult High School program at Carteret Community College rather than repeating a year in the public school system. “The program at Carteret CC was great for someone like me,” says Skye. “I hated school and struggled to sit still all day listening to lectures. Through the Adult High School I was able to tailor my curriculum and schedule to fit my needs.”

Since graduating in 2011 with her high school diploma from Carteret CC, Skye has accomplished more than she ever thought possible and currently serves as an Intelligence Specialist Second Class Petty Officer in the United States Navy. “My life is the way it is because of the instructors in the Adult High School program,” says Skye. “They cared about me and my future when I couldn’t and didn’t want to. I will forever be grateful to Carteret CC for helping me see my worth.”

In 2012, Skye joined the United States Navy. After boot camp, she attended Intelligence Analyst School before arriving at her first duty station on board the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier. In 2014, she deployed with the ship and had the experience of a lifetime. “After my first deployment, I knew this is what I wanted to do,” said Skye. “I wanted an exciting career I could be proud of and would allow me to travel. So far that’s exactly what I’ve experienced.”

Following her tour aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, Skye worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and then at the Naval Special Warfare Group 2 in Virginia. Over the years her assignments have taken her to countries such as Greece, Turkey, France, Dubai, and many more. She has provided countless intelligence updates to high ranking officials in the Department of Defense assisting them in their decision-making process.

“When Skye joined the Adult High School program in 2010, I could see that she was a very intelligent young woman with an innate willingness to learn,” says Diane Matlock, Carteret CC Basic Skills Director. “It is truly rewarding to know that Carteret Community College had some small part in preparing Skye for the outstanding, important work with the U.S. Navy.”

“Caring about how well you do, how hard you work, and how much you invest in yourself will bring you every good thing in life you could possibly imagine,” says Skye. “That was the best lesson I learned during my time at Carteret Community College. Because if you don’t believe in your own capabilities, who will?”
