Growing a Career Close to Home

Tony Patton’s Journey Through Carteret’s CNA Apprenticeship
Local student combines hands-on training and real-world experience to build a future in healthcare
For Tony Patton, building a career in healthcare is not just about gaining skills. It is about making a real difference in his community.
A Carteret County native from Stacy, Patton brings a unique background to the CNA I and II Apprenticeship program at Carteret Community College. As both an equestrian and an entrepreneur, he understands the value of hard work, discipline, and dedication. Those same qualities are now shaping his path in healthcare.
“I wanted to pursue a career as a CNA because I want to make a genuine difference in people’s lives and help them in their time of need,” Patton said.
Choosing Carteret Community College was a natural decision. Its strong reputation in healthcare training and close connection to the local community made it the right place to begin.
“It is local to my community and has a strong reputation for healthcare training,” he said.
Learning While Working
Patton discovered the CNA Apprenticeship opportunity through the College’s program resources and clinical coordinators. The ability to gain real-world experience while continuing his education was a major factor in his decision to apply.
“I wanted to start working in the field while I learn and gain real-world experience,” he said.
Through the partnership between Carteret Community College and Carteret Health Care, Patton is able to do just that. The program allows him to build skills in the classroom while applying them directly in a healthcare setting.
“It is a chance to grow professionally and build a career right here at home,” he said.
Building Skills Through Experience
In the classroom and lab, Patton has developed a strong foundation in clinical protocols, patient care, vital signs, and emergency response procedures. Hands-on learning has played a key role in helping him feel prepared for real patient interactions.
“The lab simulations and practicing procedures until they become second nature have helped prepare me,” he explained.
That preparation has carried over into his clinical experience, where he is gaining confidence through daily responsibilities and patient interaction.
“My favorite part of the program has been the hands-on learning during clinicals,” he said.
As a CNA apprentice, Patton focuses on supporting patient needs while continuing to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment.
Making a Difference in Patient Care
For Patton, the most meaningful part of the experience comes from connecting with patients and knowing he is making a difference.
“It has impacted me personally by making me feel good about what I do and knowing I am able to help others,” he said.

One moment that stands out involved working with a patient experiencing dementia.
“Being able to communicate with a patient who was confused but still able to share memories and feel happy was a meaningful experience,” he shared.
These interactions have reinforced the importance of compassion in healthcare.
“I have learned that compassion is the most important part. You have to show patients that they matter and that you understand them,” Patton said.
Confidence Through Hands-On Learning
As a hands-on learner, Patton has found that direct experience has been essential to building his confidence.
“The hands-on experience has helped me grow my confidence a lot,” he said.
Working and training in the same healthcare environment has also provided consistency and a deeper understanding of the role.
“It is great to be able to work and train in the same setting,” he added.
Through the apprenticeship, he has gained insight into the responsibilities of a CNA and the important role they play in patient care.
Preparing for the Future
Patton feels confident about entering the healthcare field and continuing to grow in his career.
“I feel ready to enter the healthcare field and make a difference,” he said.
Looking ahead, he has set clear goals for his future.
“I would like to become an Emergency Department Registered Nurse,” Patton shared.
With the foundation he is building through the apprenticeship program, he is well on his way to achieving that goal.
A Strong Start in Carteret County
Patton credits both his instructor and the program for helping him stay on track and prepared for success.
“My instructor has guided us through the process and made sure we are ready to get started in the field,” he said.
For him, the value of the program goes beyond training. It is about opportunity, growth, and building a future within his own community.
“This program is a great way to grow in the healthcare environment here in Carteret County,” Patton said.
Through students like Tony Patton, Carteret Community College continues to demonstrate how apprenticeship programs create strong, local pathways into meaningful careers, helping students gain the skills they need while serving the communities they call home.
