Building Strong Foundations for Tomorrow’s Teachers

From first-day questions to future career plans, Karen Bochnovic is a steady source of guidance and encouragement for students at Carteret.

From the moment you meet Karen Bochnovic, it’s clear she leads with heart. A proud North Carolina native from the small town of Bear Grass, population 94, Karen carries her roots with her in everything she does. Those early experiences shaped her values, her love for learning, and her deep commitment to helping others find their way.

At Carteret Community College, Karen serves as Chair of Academic Success, but her role extends far beyond a title. She sees herself, first and foremost, as an ally for students.

Meeting Students Where They Are

One of the most rewarding parts of Karen’s work happens at the very beginning of a student’s college journey. Through teaching ACA 122, she walks alongside students during a season filled with excitement, uncertainty, and big decisions about the future.

“Watching students discover their passions and begin to see themselves in a program and career they love never gets old,” Karen shares. “It’s an honor I don’t take lightly.”

Karen hopes every student she encounters feels seen and supported. She understands that college can be just as intimidating as it is exciting, and she works intentionally to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, seeking guidance, and celebrating their successes.

A Calling Rooted in Education and Faith

Education has always been more than a career for Karen. It’s a calling. Her passion began as a child, playing pretend teacher with her sister, and grew into a lifelong commitment that started with her own career as a middle school teacher in 2009.

Today, that journey has come full circle as she leads Carteret’s Teacher Preparation program, helping future educators step confidently into the profession. A teacher in front of the class

Her work is also deeply influenced by her faith. As co-advisor for the Students for Christ Club, Karen supports students as they explore and grow in their faith in a welcoming, encouraging environment. “Being able to walk alongside students in this way is truly a privilege,” she says.

Rooted in Joy and Connection

Outside of her professional roles, Karen’s personality shines through in small, joyful ways. She loves reading in her downtime, with The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah among her favorite books. If she could trade places with anyone on campus for a day, she laughs and says it would be a welding instructor. After trying plasma cutters during a PINK Day session, she was hooked and still treasures the sea turtle she cut as a reminder of the experience.

And if you ever spot Karen at karaoke, don’t be surprised if you hear Ice Ice Baby. She knows every word and is always ready for her moment on the mic.

Launching the Next Generation of Educators

Karen’s passion for education is now helping shape an exciting new opportunity for the college and the community. On March 16 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. in the Bryant Student Center, Carteret Community College will host its first University and Job Fair for Future Educators, titled Launch Your Teaching Career.

The event is open to current students and community members interested in education careers, including lead teachers, substitute teachers, and teacher assistants. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with universities and education employers, learn about pathways into the profession, and discover resources they may not even realize are available.

“Bringing universities, employers, and aspiring educators together supports our mission to grow dedicated, skilled teachers right here in Carteret County,” Karen says. “Helping launch the next generation of educators is incredibly meaningful to me.”

Through her guidance, compassion, and unwavering support, Karen Bochnovic continues to make a lasting impact, not only on students today, but on the classrooms and communities they will one day lead.
