A Student Success Story

For 35 years, addiction consumed every aspect of Hank’s life. Living day-to-day without a plan for the future, he felt trapped in a cycle of despair. That changed when he entered the Hope Recovery Program, beginning a transformative journey toward sobriety, self-discovery, and purpose.

During his recovery, Hank learned about the NCWorks Re-entry and WIOA Programs through Liz Hubbard, a meeting that became a turning point. Motivated to help others, he decided to pursue a degree in Human Services Technology and enrolled at Carteret Community College. The WIOA Program alleviated financial stress by covering his tuition and books, allowing him to focus fully on his education.

Hank’s hard work led to straight A’s, a place on the President’s List, and his Peer Support Specialist (PSS) certification. These accomplishments solidified his commitment to helping others and his plan to work in the human services field after graduating from college. While building his career, Hank intends to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or Social Work. “I want to inspire change in others by leading by example,” he says. “Maybe I can even save a few lives along the way.”

Hank’s journey proves the past doesn’t define a person. Instead, it can inspire growth and change. He credits NCWorks, WIOA, and Hope Recovery Homes for helping him rebuild his life. “With the right support, determination, and opportunities, change is possible. Our past motivates us to shape a brighter future.”
