The Foundation Awards Scholarships to Aspiring Local Teachers

Carteret Community College is deeply committed to the strength of our public school system, recognizing its vital role in shaping both our students and our community. In partnership with Carteret County Public Schools, we are proud to support initiatives that help “grow our own” teachers—ensuring that the high quality of education in our coastal community continues for generations to come.

To help carry that legacy forward, the Carteret Community College Foundation has awarded three Michael J. Smith Scholarships to local students entering our Associate in Teacher Preparation transfer program. This year’s recipients are:

  • Zach Edwards, graduate of Croatan High School
  • Gabrielle Walters, graduate of West Carteret High School
  • Molly Etter, graduate of West Carteret High School

Each of these future educators will receive $1,000 per year for two years as they complete their associate degree. The Foundation is honored to support their passion for teaching and their commitment to returning to Carteret County to serve in our schools.

The Michael J. Smith Scholarship was established in 1996 by the family of astronaut Michael J. Smith, honoring his lifelong dedication to learning and exploration. We are proud to continue his legacy by investing in the next generation of educators.
