Megan Wilhelm’s Journey Toward Her Dream Nursing Career
Through Carteret’s Nursing program and hands-on clinical experiences with partners like ECU Health Medical Center, students don’t just prepare for a career—they begin living it.
For many nursing students, the dream begins in the classroom. At Carteret Community College, that dream quickly becomes reality through hands-on learning, expert instruction, and real-world clinical experiences that prepare students to thrive in today’s healthcare environment.
This summer, nursing student Megan Wilhelm experienced exactly what that journey looks like.
As a Nurse Extern at ECU Health Medical Center, Megan worked in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), one of the hospital’s most specialized and fast-paced environments. There, she cared for critically ill patients recovering from complex cardiovascular procedures while working side-by-side with experienced ICU nurses.
Every shift challenged her to think critically, sharpen her assessment skills, and recognize subtle changes in patient conditions. She gained valuable experience using advanced monitoring equipment, participating in evidence-based patient care, and collaborating with physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals. Along the way, she also discovered the compassion, teamwork, and communication that define exceptional nursing.
What made the experience even more meaningful was seeing the connection between what she was learning at Carteret and what she encountered every day in the hospital.
While completing NUR-213A, Megan was studying concepts such as vasoactive medications, mechanical ventilation, and hemodynamic monitoring. Instead of simply reading about these advanced topics in a textbook, she witnessed them in action while caring for real patients. The result was a deeper understanding of the material, greater clinical confidence, and a stronger foundation for her future career.
“The classroom prepared me for the experience, and the experience made everything we learned come to life,” Megan shared.
Her learning extended well beyond the CVICU. Megan also shadowed a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), gaining firsthand exposure to anesthesia care, advanced airway management, and the precision required throughout the surgical experience. She also completed a flight shift with EastCare, where she observed the unique challenges of providing critical care during emergency air transport across eastern North Carolina.
Each opportunity expanded her perspective, strengthened her clinical judgment, and confirmed her passion for critical care nursing. Today, Megan’s long-term goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)—a dream she is already building one experience at a time.
