Living Shoreline Academy

Carteret CC’s Living Shoreline Academy offers a comprehensive series of courses designed to protect and sustain waterfront ecosystems. The program focuses on three key areas:

• Living Shoreline Theory & Stabilization: Explore the principles of living shorelines, including construction, permitting, and natural stabilization techniques used across Coastal North Carolina.
• Structures & Design: Dive deeper into site assessments, design considerations, materials, construction techniques, and permitting processes for successful shoreline projects.
• Sustainable Coastal Landscaping: Learn to identify and use native, salt-tolerant plants to reduce erosion, create natural buffers, and enhance coastal resilience.

Shellfish Academy

Carteret CC’s Shellfish Academy is an 8-week program developed in collaboration with NOAA Sea Grant. Designed with flexible scheduling, this program accommodates students who are employed while pursuing an education in shellfish aquaculture. The curriculum covers all aspects of shellfish farming, including an introduction to farming techniques, steps for obtaining a farming site, and guidance on starting a shellfish aquaculture business in North Carolina.
