English as a Second Language
Program Overview
Carteret Community College’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program helps individuals improve their English so they can communicate more confidently at work, at home, and in the community. Students build practical skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills that they can apply in real-world workplace and community settings.
The program also helps students learn about local career opportunities, job training, and other resources available through the college. Whether you want to find a better job, advance in your current career, earn a credential, or continue your education, ESL can help you take the next step.
Our goal is simple: help students improve their English, reach their career goals, and become a stronger part of the Carteret County workforce.
Program Requirements
- Students must be at least 16 years old to enroll in any class.
- Students must attend orientation.
Attendance Expectations
Regular attendance is an important part of successful English language learning. ESL students are expected to attend class consistently and participate actively in instruction. ESL instruction is designed to help students build their English skills step by step in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Missing classes can affect a student's progress and ability to demonstrate how much they have learned.
Students should make every effort to complete the full course. Students are expected to attend all scheduled class sessions and arrive on time. To remain actively enrolled and make satisfactory progress, students are expected to maintain at least 80% attendance, unless otherwise determined by the College or program.

Step 1: Register for Orientation
Select an available session to attend the mandatory ESL Orientation with the link provided below.
Step 2: Provide Documentation
If available, please bring the following items to Orientation:
- Social Security or Tax ID card (signed) (copies not accepted). If you do not have access to one of these items, you may still be eligible to participate. Call us at (252) 222-6083 for information.
- Government or state-issued photo ID (no school or work IDs accepted).
