Erica Rains’ Horticulture Journey
Where Passion Takes Root.
Rooted in Passion: Erica Rains Finds Growth Through Carteret CC’s Horticulture Program
For Erica Rains, the love of plants runs deep — passed down through generations of women in her family. “My passion for plants was inherited,” she said. “The women of my family, from my mother to my great aunt, have always been fervent growers. I remember my great aunt’s eclectic garden that I loved to visit. The love for nurturing plants eventually led me to seek out an education in horticulture.”
When Erica moved to North Carolina, a local friend who owns a landscaping business encouraged her to check out Carteret Community College. “He spoke so highly of Mr. Beasley,” Erica recalled. “He told me he’d be an amazing instructor to learn from — and he was absolutely right.”
As a full-time mom and the wife of an active-duty Marine, Erica’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. “Balancing my roles as a student and mom has presented significant challenges,” she said. “Since I’m the primary caregiver to my kids, any unexpected needs fall to me. I’m deeply grateful to my understanding instructors and to my husband for the support that allows me to stay focused on my education.”
Erica’s gratitude extends especially to her instructor, Mr. Beasley. “He’s been more than an amazing teacher — he’s a true mentor,” she said. “He’s always available to answer questions about school or work and has helped me grow confidence and skills.” She also credits her close friend and classmate, Megan, for being a source of strength and laughter. “We’ve shared late-night study sessions, anxiety attacks, and countless laughs. I truly look up to her.”
Her favorite flower, the sunflower, has been a lifelong symbol of resilience and hope. “They were the first thing I ever grew when I tried planting bird seed in second grade,” Erica shared. “Now, as an adult who manages anxiety and depression, the sunflower reminds me to always seek out the bright side of things.”
When she isn’t tending to her plants, Erica can be found soaking up the natural beauty of North Carolina — reading, hiking, kayaking, and even learning how to surf. “My lifelong enjoyment of the outdoors is another reason horticulture felt like such a natural fit for me,” she said.
Her greatest inspiration, however, comes from her children. “My love for growing things and caring for the environment is continually reignited by my kids,” Erica said. “My youngest son loves visiting the greenhouse and asking endless questions in the aquaculture department. Seeing me pursue my passion fills me with hope that my children will follow their hearts and find fulfilling work in whatever field they choose.”
After completing the program, Erica plans to combine continued education with hands-on experience at a local greenhouse or nursery. “My goals are always evolving,” she said, “but I’d love to teach or even start my own nursery one day.”
For Erica Rains, horticulture isn’t just about growing plants — it’s about growing people, community, and passion. Her journey through Carteret Community College’s Horticulture Program is a testament to resilience, curiosity, and the beauty of following your roots.
