From Experience to Purpose
Samantha Lopez-Romero’s Journey in Dental Assisting
Inspired by her family’s experiences and driven by a desire to serve others, Samantha Lopez-Romero is building a meaningful career through Carteret Community College’s Dental Assisting Program
For Samantha Lopez-Romero, a career in dental assisting is more than just a profession. It is personal.
Born and raised in Morehead City and now living in Newport, Samantha is a first-generation college graduate whose journey has been shaped by resilience, family, and a deep desire to give back. In 2024, she earned her Associate in Science degree from Carteret Community College, becoming the first in her family to reach that milestone.
But her story did not end there. It was just beginning.
A Purpose Rooted in Personal Experience
Samantha’s inspiration comes from her mother, whose strength and sacrifices left a lasting impression.
Growing up, her parents worked tirelessly to provide for their family, but access to dental care was limited.
When they were finally able to visit the dentist, Samantha witnessed her mother struggle not only with the financial burden, but also with the language barrier.
“She didn’t fully understand what was being said, and I could see the fear in her eyes,” Samantha shared.
That moment stayed with her and ultimately shaped her future.
“I knew I wanted to help people who were in the same situation,” she said.
Finding the Right Path at the Right Time
After completing her associate degree, Samantha found herself uncertain about her next step. She explored programs outside the area, but long commutes and limited communication left her hesitant.
Then, everything changed. ![]()
“When I heard Carteret was adding a Dental Assisting Program, it felt like my prayers had been answered,” she said.
The opportunity meant more than convenience. It meant purpose. Samantha knew she wanted to serve her community, especially Spanish-speaking and lower-income families in Morehead City.
Even more meaningful was the chance to be part of the first-ever graduating class of the program, a unique opportunity to contribute to something new and impactful at Carteret.
Building Skills That Matter
Since joining the program, Samantha has gained hands-on experience that prepares her for real-world patient care.
From assisting with dental restorations to performing coronal polishing and learning how to take impressions, her training has been both comprehensive and practical.
Simulation labs have played a key role in her development.
“Lab simulations are the foundation of this program,” she explained. “They prepare us to walk into clinicals ready to support our team.”
Beyond technical skills, Samantha has learned the importance of communication, efficiency, and staying one step ahead in a fast-paced environment.
A Learning Environment Built on Support
A major part of Samantha’s success has been the support she has received from her instructor, Amanda Belleville.
“She is so dedicated and passionate about dental assisting,” Samantha said. “She truly cares about her students.”

From hands-on instruction to personal encouragement, Amanda has created a classroom environment where students feel supported, challenged, and motivated.
“Our classroom is filled with learning, love, and laughter,” Samantha shared.
That support has helped Samantha step outside her comfort zone and grow into a confident future professional.
Preparing for a Career and a Calling
As Samantha prepares to begin her clinical rotations, she is eager to apply her skills in real-world settings.
She knows the transition may feel overwhelming at first, but she sees it as part of the process.
“Working with patients will be nerve-racking at first, but it will help me grow and become more confident,” she said.
Her long-term goals reflect both ambition and compassion.
After becoming a dental assistant, she plans to pursue dental hygiene and eventually provide free dental services to underserved communities.
“No one should have to live with pain or hide their smile because they can’t afford care,” she said.
Giving Back to the Community
For Samantha, her future career is about more than providing care. It is about advocacy.
She hopes to support Spanish-speaking patients by serving as both a translator and a trusted resource.
“I want my patients to know someone is there for them,” she said.
That mission brings her full circle.
“I remember sitting in that chair as a little girl, wishing someone could help my mom understand,” she shared. “Now I get to be that person for someone else.”
Growing Into Confidence
Samantha’s journey has also been one of personal growth.
Through the program, she has developed stronger discipline, improved time management, and a deeper sense of responsibility.
“I have become the person I have always wanted to be,” she said.
Being selected for a student spotlight was one of her proudest achievements, a reflection of her hard work and perseverance.
A Message to Future Students
For anyone considering a career in dental assisting, Samantha offers encouragement.
“This career comes with responsibility, but helping people live healthier, more confident lives is the greatest reward,” she said.
Her advice is simple. “Take the chance. Attend an information session, ask questions, and see if it’s right for you.”
A Future Full of Purpose
Samantha Lopez-Romero’s story is a powerful reminder that our experiences can shape our purpose and that with the right support and opportunity, students can turn challenges into meaningful careers that make a lasting impact.
At Carteret Community College, she did not just find a program. She found her purpose.
