Theresa Washburn’s Journey Through Carteret’s CNA Apprenticeship

Overcoming adversity, one student finds healing, purpose, and a path forward in healthcare

For Theresa Washburn, pursuing a career in healthcare is not just about building a future. It is about reclaiming one.

Originally from Hop Bottom, Pennsylvania, Washburn’s journey has been shaped by significant challenges, personal loss, and resilience. After relocating to North Carolina in 2016, she began the long process of rebuilding her life, step by step. Today, as a CNA I and II apprentice through Carteret Community College, she is doing more than starting a new career. She is proving to herself that a brighter future is still possible.

“This opportunity has given me a second chance and shown me that I am still capable of doing something meaningful with my life,” Washburn said.

Rediscovering a Dream

Washburn’s interest in healthcare began years ago. As a teenager, she started working toward a future in nursing, but life circumstances forced her to put those plans on hold.

“I originally began this path when I was 16 with the goal of becoming a nurse, but I thought those dreams were gone,” she said.

The CNA Apprenticeship program at Carteret Community College, offered in partnership with Carteret Health Care, gave her the opportunity to return to that dream. She discovered the program while navigating her own medical journey and immediately recognized its potential.

“I found the opportunity while I was in the hospital for my own surgery,” she shared.

What began as a search for stability quickly became a turning point.

Learning to Care for Others

Through the program, Washburn has developed a wide range of skills, from assisting with daily living activities to supporting patients through recovery and wound care. More importantly, she has learned how to care for both the physical and emotional needs of patients.

“The training has prepared me to handle not only physical care but also the emotional side of what patients go through,” she said.

Her favorite part of the program has been the opportunity to learn directly from instructors and apply those lessons during clinical experiences.

“The clinicals and the time with my instructors have meant so much to me,” she said.

Working at Carteret Health Care has given her a realistic view of the profession, from fast-paced days to moments that allow for deeper connection with patients.

Compassion Through Experience

Washburn’s own life experiences have shaped the way she approaches patient care. She understands firsthand how important it is for patients to feel seen, heard, and supported.

“A small act of compassion can go a long way when someone is going through something difficult,” she said.

One meaningful experience involved supporting a patient who was struggling through a difficult time.

“He just needed someone to listen and remind him that he was strong and capable of moving forward,” she said.

For Washburn, these moments reinforce why she chose this path.

“It shows patients that they are not alone and that even small actions can make a big difference in their recovery,” she said.

Strength Through Support

Washburn credits the support she has received from her instructors and mentors as a key part of her success.

“They have encouraged me every step of the way and helped guide me when I needed it most,” she said.

She also expressed gratitude for the support from her employer and those involved in the apprenticeship program, noting that their encouragement helped her continue moving forward during difficult times.

This strong support system has allowed her to stay focused on her goals, even while navigating personal challenges outside of the classroom.

Moving Forward with Purpose

Through the CNA Apprenticeship program, Washburn has gained more than technical skills. She has gained confidence, direction, and hope.

“This experience has shown me how capable I truly am, even while facing my own challenges,” she said.

She is proud of her academic success and the determination it took to reach this point.

“I have proven to myself that I am not limited by my circumstances,” she said.

Looking ahead, Washburn plans to continue her education, with interests in phlebotomy, telemetry training, and potentially returning to pursue a nursing degree.

Her long-term goal is simple but powerful.

“I want to continue my education and never stop learning,” she said.

A Story of Resilience and Renewal

Washburn’s journey is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to start again. Through determination, support, and opportunity, she has transformed challenges into motivation and found a renewed sense of purpose in healthcare.

Her message to others considering the program reflects that perspective.

“Take the chance. It is worth every moment,” she said.

Through stories like Theresa Washburn’s, Carteret Community College continues to demonstrate how apprenticeship programs do more than prepare students for careers. They provide pathways to healing, growth, and new beginnings.
