Elkanah Marion Builds a Future in the Operating Room Through Carteret’s Surgical Tech Apprenticeship
Hands-on experience and clinical training prepare one student for success in a fast-paced surgical environment
For Elkanah Marion, the path into healthcare has always been rooted in curiosity and a strong interest in science. Now, as a Surgical Technology apprentice at Carteret Community College, that interest is evolving into a focused and highly skilled career.
Originally from Florida and raised in Havelock, North Carolina, Marion has long been drawn to biology and the medical field. When he discovered Carteret’s Surgical Technology program, he recognized it as the opportunity he had been waiting for.
“I have always been interested in biology and the medical field, so when I found out about the Surgical Tech program, I was excited to apply,” Marion said.
Learning Through Immersion
With no prior medical experience, Marion entered the program knowing that hands-on exposure would be essential to his success. The apprenticeship component, offered through Carteret’s partnership with Carteret Health Care, provided exactly that.
“I joined the apprenticeship program because it gives me the chance to practice what I am learning, participate in hands-on training, and prepare for the professional environment I will be entering,” he said.
By combining classroom instruction with real-world clinical experience, the program allows students to develop both technical knowledge and practical skills at the same time.
From Classroom to Operating Room
One of the most striking aspects of Marion’s experience has been the rapid pace of learning. In just a matter of months, he has gained a significant amount of knowledge and begun applying it in real surgical settings.
“The amount of information I have learned in six to seven months has been surprising,” he said.
He credits his instructor’s teaching approach for helping him retain and apply that knowledge effectively.
“Our instructor uses a variety of methods, including interactive activities, to help us stay engaged and prepared for clinical,” Marion explained.
Now completing his clinical training at Carteret Health Care, Marion is actively involved in the surgical environment, working alongside experienced professionals and gaining firsthand insight into the operating room.
Developing Confidence and Skill
As a surgical tech apprentice, Marion’s role requires precision, focus, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team. Through repetition and real-world experience, he has seen measurable growth in his abilities.
“Working in the operating room, in central sterile, and alongside surgical teams has helped me retain information and anticipate what is needed in different situations,” he said.

One example of that growth stands out clearly.
“When I first practiced setting up a C-section table, it took me about 45 minutes. Now I can set it up in about 20 to 25 minutes and be ready to begin,” he said.
This type of progress reflects not only increased efficiency but also a deeper understanding of surgical procedures and workflow.
The Value of Real-World Experience
For Marion, gaining hands-on experience while still in school has been one of the most valuable aspects of the program.
“Being in a real hospital setting while learning helps build a routine and strengthens both confidence and instinct,” he said.
The partnership between Carteret Community College and Carteret Health Care has played a key role in making that experience possible.
“I appreciate that the partnership provides students with opportunities that enhance our learning,” he added.
Growth Beyond the Classroom
Beyond technical skills, Marion has experienced significant personal and professional growth throughout the program.
“I came into the program feeling nervous and unsure, but I have learned to trust my knowledge, take initiative, and grow in confidence,” he said.
Having access to mentors, including both his instructor and experienced surgical techs, has made a meaningful difference in his development.
“Having someone relatable to go to for advice and questions has been very helpful in this new environment,” he shared.
Looking Ahead
After completing the program, Marion plans to continue his career with Carteret Health Care, building on the foundation he has developed through his apprenticeship.
His experience so far has reinforced his confidence in his chosen path and his ability to succeed in a demanding, detail-oriented field.
Advice for Future Students
For those considering the Surgical Technology program, Marion encourages a mindset focused on growth and learning.
“Go into the program ready to learn without putting too much pressure on yourself,” he said. “Be willing to ask questions and understand that confidence comes with time and consistency.”
He emphasizes that every professional starts as a student, and success comes from embracing that process.
