Balancing Work, Family, and Education: Jared Meyer’s Journey in Business Administration

A Carteret CC student proves it’s never too late to learn, lead, and grow.

When Jared Meyer decided to go back to school, he wasn’t just chasing a degree — he was setting an example for his children and investing in his future. As a full-time law enforcement professional, husband, and father of three (including a newborn during the program), Jared knew that returning to school wouldn’t be easy. But when he discovered that Carteret Community College offered a fully online Business Administration Program, everything clicked into place.

“I started searching for colleges that offered a fully online program,” Jared explained. “I explored options across the state but realized that Carteret Community College — right here at home — offered exactly what I was looking for. Having the opportunity to study online while still being close enough to visit campus whenever I needed help made it an easy choice.”

That balance of flexibility and support turned out to be the key to Jared’s success. Although he was nervous about returning to school in his thirties, Carteret CC’s instructors quickly helped him find his footing. “I was worried about managing my time, but the instructors were incredibly supportive,” he said. “Anytime I needed assistance, it was just an email or phone call away. I even visited campus for extra study sessions and never felt like a burden when I asked for help.”

Through the program, Jared found not only encouragement but also a deeper understanding of leadership, finance, and management — skills that have already made an impact in both his professional and personal life. “My favorite classes have been those focused on management and leadership,” he shared. “I’ve always enjoyed being in mentorship roles, and these courses have helped me grow both professionally and personally.”

Another major turning point was gaining a new appreciation for financial literacy. “The classes have taught me everything from personal finance to taxes and accounting,” he said. “I thought I had a good grasp of finances, but this program opened my eyes tremendously. It’s given me tools that will help me for the rest of my life.”

Balancing work, school, and family has come with daily challenges, but Jared sees those moments as part of what makes his experience so rewarding. “I work a demanding full-time job, and I have a wife and three young kids at home — one of whom was born while I was enrolled,” he said. “It’s been challenging, but Carteret CC made it possible to stay on track.”

For Jared, the lessons learned in the Business Administration program go far beyond the classroom. Though he doesn’t plan to run a business, he sees the value of the program in every part of his life. “The best advice I can give anyone thinking about this program is simple — do it,” he said. “Even if you’re not planning to own a business, the skills you learn here apply to any career. It gives you confidence to grow and succeed in whatever you do.”

Outside of work and school, Jared finds joy in family time and simple pleasures. “We’re a very active family and spend as much time as possible outdoors,” he said. “I also enjoy exercising and collecting sports cards — something I loved as a kid that I now share with my sons.” When he’s not studying or on duty, you’ll often find him at the Sports Center of Morehead City. “It might not be the typical answer,” he said with a laugh, “but it’s where we spend a lot of our free time. We’ve made great friends there, and my family loves the pool in the summer.”

Reflecting on his experience, Jared is proud of how far he’s come — and grateful for the support that got him there. “Carteret CC gave me the flexibility and encouragement I needed to succeed,” he said. “It’s helped me grow not just as a student, but as a leader, husband, and father.”
