Cultural Enrichment: BHC’s Impact on Carteret CC and the Community
Campus Week of Giving
Picture a crowd of almost 500 people filling up half of East Carteret High School’s gym in April 2024 to experience ZuZu African Acrobats, an international touring group, who took the stage to exhibit gravity-defying stunts and showcase the beauty of East Africa. This opportunity to promote arts education included local supporting acts: The Dance Arts Studio Academy of Performing Arts (Morehead City, NC), Crystal Coast Gymnastics (Morehead City, NC), and Tiller School (Beaufort, NC). Additionally, through our success, we, the Black History Committee (BHC), were able to contribute the majority of concession sales proceeds to East Carteret High School’s Athletic Booster Club.
Fast forward to May 2024 at the College’s graduation where African-American students with a 3.0+ GPA wore custom monogramed BHC stoles to celebrate the completion of their academic journey here at Carteret.
BHC finished out the year by hosting the Juneteenth event “Taste of the South”: a sold-out Southern culinary celebration that highlighted six African-American student chefs in the culinary program (4 out of the 6 graduated in May 2024; 1 out of 6 graduated in May 2023; 2 of the 6 are Goellner French exchange students) and featured “Bloom,” a solo photographic exhibition by an African-American graduate from the College’s Photographic Technology.
Receiving the Foundation’s mini-grant for Cultural Awareness and Inclusion Initiative was an amazing gift! It provided BHC with an opportunity to create a more inclusive and culturally diverse campus and community environment while encouraging intercultural awareness and creativity. Through our events, BHC was able to collaborate with local schools, organizations like the Arts Council of Carteret County, and businesses to expand resources, event reach, and educate the campus and community about the historical and contemporary contributions of minority individuals and communities.
Thank you to all our employees for your dedication and commitment to Carteret CC. Together, we can build a better future for Carteret.
