Saylor Gray’s Journey Through Carteret’s CNA Apprenticeship

From high school graduate to future nurse, one student finds direction through hands-on learning and community support

For Saylor Gray, the path into healthcare began with a simple desire to help others but quickly grew into something much more meaningful. Today, as a CNA I and II apprentice, Gray is not only gaining valuable experience but also building a clear vision for a lifelong career in nursing.

A Carteret County native, Gray began her journey shortly after high school, stepping into the healthcare field with determination and a willingness to learn.

“I have always wanted to help people, and knowing that even a few minutes of my time can brighten someone’s day inspired me to pursue this path,” Gray said.

That passion led her to Carteret Community College, where she found a program that offered both support and opportunity.

“Carteret provided a supportive environment and a clear pathway into healthcare. The instructors are dedicated and truly care about student success,” she said.

A Turning Point Through Apprenticeship

Gray discovered the CNA Apprenticeship opportunity through her involvement in the CAPE internship program and connections with Carteret Health Care. What began as an introduction to the field quickly became a defining moment in her journey.

“This opportunity means everything to me. It gave me direction when my original plans fell through and helped me rebuild my future,” she shared.

Through the partnership between Carteret Community College and Carteret Health Care, Gray has been able to gain real-world experience while continuing her education, a combination that has accelerated both her skills and confidence.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Inside the classroom and lab, Gray has developed a strong foundation in patient care, communication, and clinical skills. But it is the hands-on experience in a real healthcare setting that has truly shaped her growth.

“It is incredibly rewarding and eye-opening. You learn something new every day,” she said about working in the hospital during her training.

From assisting patients with daily activities to supporting the healthcare team, her role as a CNA apprentice has provided meaningful, real-time learning experiences.

“I have grown tremendously. I am much more confident in my skills and abilities than when I first started,” Gray said.

Compassion at the Core

At the heart of Gray’s experience is a deep understanding of compassion and connection in patient care.

“I have learned to treat every patient like family and to always show kindness and respect,” she said.

Even the smallest moments can leave a lasting impact.

“Something as simple as making a patient smile can be meaningful,” she shared.

These daily interactions have shaped her perspective, helping her grow not only as a healthcare professional but also as a person.

“It has made me more grateful for everyday life and more compassionate toward others,” Gray said.

Support That Drives Success

Gray credits much of her success to the support she has received from both her instructors and mentors throughout the program.

“They go above and beyond by offering extra help, guidance, and support whenever it is needed,” she said.

She also highlighted the many individuals who have played a role in her journey, from instructors to healthcare professionals who have helped guide and encourage her along the way.

At Carteret Health Care, she has found an environment that supports both her work and her education, allowing her to grow while balancing multiple responsibilities.

Overcoming Challenges and Moving Forward

Like many students, Gray has faced challenges along the way, including personal and academic setbacks. Instead of slowing her down, those experiences strengthened her determination.

“This program changed my life. It gave me purpose, direction, and the opportunity to build a future in healthcare,” she said.

One of her proudest accomplishments has been her progression from a CAPE intern to a CNA I, now working toward CNA II, and being accepted into the Associate Degree Nursing program.

A Clear Vision for the Future

Gray’s goals continue to build on the foundation she has created through the apprenticeship program. She plans to enter nursing school, earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and eventually become an Emergency Nurse Practitioner.

She also intends to continue working with Carteret Health Care as she advances her education, further strengthening her connection to the local healthcare community.

Encouraging Others to Take the First Step

For those considering a career in healthcare, Gray offers encouragement rooted in her own experience.

“Stay committed, be compassionate, and treat every patient like family,” she said.

When it comes to the apprenticeship program, her advice is simple.

“It is the best decision I have ever made. The support you receive and the experience you gain prepare you for a rewarding career,” she said.

Through stories like Saylor Gray’s, Carteret Community College continues to demonstrate the life-changing impact of apprenticeship programs. By combining education, experience, and strong community partnerships, the College is helping students turn ambition into achievement and build meaningful careers in healthcare.
