From Healthcare to Law: Hannah’s Paralegal Journey

After years in healthcare, Hannah found a new professional direction through Carteret Community College’s Paralegal Program—one built on skill development, support, and long-term opportunity.

Hannah’s path to the legal field didn’t follow a straight line—and that’s exactly what makes her journey meaningful. After spending years working in healthcare, she made the intentional decision to pursue a long-standing interest in law by enrolling in the Paralegal Program at Carteret.

“I always had an interest in law,” Hannah shared. “I reached a point where I had to decide whether to continue in the medical field or step into something new. Choosing the paralegal program was the right move.”

For Hannah, the program offered more than a career change. It provided a structured, practical entry point into the legal profession with opportunities for continued growth, whether working as a paralegal or eventually pursuing law school.

Learning in a Supportive, Real-World Environment

Hannah chose Carteret CC because of its reputation for student support—and she quickly experienced that commitment firsthand.

“The staff and instructors genuinely want students to succeed,” she said. “That support makes a difference.”

Many of her instructors are practicing attorneys or legal professionals, bringing real-world insight into the classroom. Courses such as Family Law, Civil Litigation, Constitutional Law, and Legal Research and Writing became favorites, not only for their content but for how directly they connected theory to practice.

“I really enjoy legal writing and research,” Hannah said. “Writing case briefs, complaints, and trial briefs helped me understand how the law functions in practice.”

Through hands-on assignments and detailed feedback, Hannah strengthened her legal writing, research, and citation skills—tools that have increased her confidence and prepared her for professional legal settings. She credits Mrs. Bagshawe in particular for her leadership and guidance throughout the program.

Balancing Education, Family, and Purpose

Hannah began the Paralegal Program during a demanding season of life. Over the past two years, she balanced a full-time job, full-time coursework, and raising four children.

“It hasn’t been easy,” she said. “But staying focused, managing my time, and leaning on my faith helped me stay on track.”

She also credits Carteret Community College for offering resources that support student parents, including assistance with childcare expenses—support that allows students to remain engaged in their education while managing family responsibilities.

Looking Ahead and Beyond the Classroom

After completing the program, Hannah plans to continue her education at Liberty University, where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree. She hopes to work in a law office when the right opportunity arises and remains open to attending law school in the future. Her interests include family law and criminal law, with real estate law also capturing her attention.

Outside of her studies, Hannah enjoys unwinding with a book, a cup of coffee, and soft jazz music. She is also a lifelong singer who has led worship for many years and previously performed the National Anthem during her service in the Air Force—an experience that reflects both her discipline and creativity.

A Reflection of Carteret’s Commitment to Student Success

Hannah’s experience in the Paralegal Program reflects Carteret Community College’s dedication to accessible education, supportive learning environments, and career-focused training. Her journey highlights how students from diverse professional backgrounds can successfully transition into new fields with the right instruction, resources, and encouragement.

With determination, expert faculty support, and a clear sense of purpose, Hannah is building a strong foundation for a future in law.
