You Belong Here

You belong here logoCarteret Community College in partnership with the Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program at ECU Health Medical Center invite the public to view the documentary “You Belong Here” a celebration of LGBTQ+ resilience and the impact of allyship on inclusive belonging in the Rural South on Wednesday, September 28th in Joslyn Hall. The documentary will be shown at both 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Joslyn Hall in the McGee Building on the campus followed by a brief panel discussion on topics including suicide, homophobia, self-harm, and mental health.
Based on research done by the Trevor Project, “LGBTQ+ youth are more than 4 times as likely to attempt suicide than their peers.” The documentary will give viewers a diverse understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences in the South, while also recognizing the vital role that affirming allies play in promoting positive mental health and suicide prevention amongst individuals who identify within the LGBTQ+ community. The hope is to promote collective growth in our communal understanding of the unique stories, adversities, and resiliency of LGBTQ+ people in the South. Funding for this project is provided by the NC DHHS Comprehensive Prevention Suicide Grant and Pitt County Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
