Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because they are free money—financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid. Grants are often need-based, while scholarships are usually merit-based. Carteret Community College Financial Aid Office awards scholarships to new, incoming students, continuing students, and graduating students and all students are encouraged to apply.

Grants and scholarships can come from the federal government, your state government, your college or career school, or a private or nonprofit organizations. Do your research, apply for any grants or scholarships you might be eligible for, and be sure to meet application deadlines!

Next NC Scholarship

Get money for college that you don’t have to pay back.

The Next NC Scholarship is a financial aid program that helps most North Carolinians from households making $80,000 or less pursue higher education by fully covering tuition and fees at any community college or more than half, if not all, of tuition and fees to attend any public university in the state. The best part? It’s money that doesn’t have to be repaid. To find out if you’re eligible visit www.nextncscholarship.org.

Applying is simple. Just submit the FAFSA form. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive the Next NC Scholarship. There are no additional forms to fill out.

NC Longleaf Commitment Grant

The Longleaf Commitment is a grant program for 2022 North Carolina high school graduates who will attend one of our state’s “Great 58” community colleges starting in the Fall 2022 semester. High school graduates may be eligible to receive this grant – not a loan – to cover tuition and fees toward a degree or to attain transfer credit.
Full-time eligible students are guaranteed to receive $700 to $2,800 per academic year, for a total of two years. Less than full-time students may receive a partial award.

Federal Pell Grant (PELL)

This is the Federal government’s primary grant program. Funding for this program ranges from $657 – $6,195 for the 2019-20 academic year. This grant is “gift aid” and does not have to be repaid as long as the student does not completely withdraw or is withdrawn from all courses for the semester. Awards are based on the student’s EFC (expected family contribution) that is listed on the FAFSA.

The Department of Education has announced that students eligible for the Pell Grant may be able to receive a third disbursement during the same academic year.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The FSEOG program is for students with financial need who, without the grant, would be unable to continue their education. Typical awards begin at $400. Priority in awarding is given to students who are Pell grant eligible and have a zero EFC.
