Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because they are free money—financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid. Grants are often need-based, while scholarships are usually merit-based. Carteret Community College Financial Aid Office awards scholarships to new, incoming students, continuing students, and graduating students and all students are encouraged to apply.
Grants and scholarships can come from the federal government, your state government, your college or career school, or a private or nonprofit organizations. Do your research, apply for any grants or scholarships you might be eligible for, and be sure to meet application deadlines!
The Longleaf Commitment is a grant program for 2022 North Carolina high school graduates who will attend one of our state’s “Great 58” community colleges starting in the Fall 2022 semester. High school graduates may be eligible to receive this grant – not a loan – to cover tuition and fees toward a degree or to attain transfer credit.
Full-time eligible students are guaranteed to receive $700 to $2,800 per academic year, for a total of two years. Less than full-time students may receive a partial award.
This is the Federal government’s primary grant program. Funding for this program ranges from $657 – $6,195 for the 2019-20 academic year. This grant is “gift aid” and does not have to be repaid as long as the student does not completely withdraw or is withdrawn from all courses for the semester. Awards are based on the student’s EFC (expected family contribution) that is listed on the FAFSA.
The Department of Education has announced that students eligible for the Pell Grant may be able to receive a third disbursement during the same academic year.
The FSEOG program is for students with financial need who, without the grant, would be unable to continue their education. Typical awards begin at $400. Priority in awarding is given to students who are Pell grant eligible and have a zero EFC.
The NCCCG grant is awarded to students who are North Carolina residents, are accepted for admission into an approved curriculum program, and are enrolled at least half-time. Students must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Selection of recipients is made by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. Additional funding is available for students who enrolled for 15+ semester hours. Awards are prorated based on enrollment. Funding is limited to Fall and/or Spring semesters.
The NCELS program was created by the 2005 General Assembly to provide financial assistance to needy North Carolina resident students who are enrolled at least half-time. Students must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Selection of recipients is made by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. Awards are prorated based on enrollment. Funding is limited to Fall and/or Spring semesters.
The NCTAP program is designed to assistance students who are enrolled in programs of study that are in high demand and prepare students for high demand occupations but enroll substantially fewer students than program capacity. Students must be North Carolina residents. Eligible programs of study are determined by the college.
The Financial Aid Office at Carteret CC is committed to helping students reach their educational goals. Scholarships are awarded based on a wide variety of criteria, such as volunteerism, community/college involvement, grade point average, major program of study, etc. All students are encourage to complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and submit a Carteret CC Scholarship Application.
Please respond to all questions and proofread your application before returning it to the Financial Aid Office. The appearance of your submitted application is taken into consideration when awarding a scholarship. Although scholarship applications are accepted and awarded throughout the year, the priority deadline is March 31 for the upcoming academic year. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Funds are awarded to students with no other form of financial aid. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 semester hours and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Scholarship may not exceed book and supply charges or the excess of tuition, fees, books, and supply charges minus other financial aid.
Awarded to a non-traditional student who is a NC resident enrolled in the Culinary Arts program.
Awarded based on a recommendation from the Executive Director of the Coastal Carolina Boys and Girls Club. The student shall have a minimum 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial need, reside in Carteret or Craven Counties, be enrolled at least 12 hours per semester, and comply with student conduct rules and maintain academic integrity.
Awarded to a student enrolled at least half-time (6-8 semester hours)
Awarded to a student who maintains a 2.0 GPA or higher.
Awarded to a working student not qualified for Federal Pell Grant who is enrolled at least 1/2 time (6+ semester hours). Student must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Awarded to Carteret County residents who graduated from East Carteret High School. Student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA who shows financial need and enrolls as a full-time (12+ semester hours) student. Recipients must attend one club function.
Awarded to a non-traditional student who is a Carteret County resident. Student must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and attend at least 1 meeting or event.
Student must be enrolled in the Automotive Technology curriculum.
Awarded to East Carteret High School students who show financial need and who have demonstrated good moral character.
Awarded to Boat Manufacturing or Marine Propulsion students who are residents of Eastern North Carolina, with priority awarded to Carteret County residents.
This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the Criminal Justice and Basic Law Enforcement program.
Awarded to a second-year student who maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Awarded to a returning graduate that is a resident of Carteret County. Recipient must volunteer for one College or Foundation event and attend one Alumni meeting.
Interested students must complete an NCAEOP Student Scholarship form and return all required attachments to Financial Aid by August 31. This scholarship is awarded to a new student who shows a financial need, maintains a 3.0 GPA, is an NC resident and graduate of any NC high school, and is enrolled in 6 credit hours or more.
Awarded to a resident of Carteret County who demonstrates financial need and is enrolled in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, or Boat Manufacturing and Service Technology.
One scholarship is awarded to a second-year full-time student enrolled in the Respiratory curriculum who is a resident of Carteret County; and one scholarship is awarded to a second-year full-time student enrolled in the Radiography curriculum who is a resident of Carteret County.
Awarded to a non-traditional college transfer student that plans to earn a Teaching degree. Preference is giving to students studying English or Humanities. Student must enroll full-time and be a Carteret County Resident.
This scholarship is awarded to the Culinary Arts student who is a Carteret County resident that enrolls as a full-time student and maintains a minimum 2.75 GPA.
Student must be enrolled in a Health Sciences curriculum, maintain a 3.0 GPA, be a resident of Carteret County, and show a financial need.
Student must be enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing curriculum and show a financial need.
Student must plan to pursue a degree in Education and be enrolled in the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science college transfer curriculum. Student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, be a North Carolina or Maryland resident, and show financial need.
Awarded to a student who maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Awarded to a Hotel Restaurant Management or Culinary student who maintains a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Awarded by the Basic Skills Department to a student with the highest GED score.
Awarded to a non-traditional full-time student who is a resident of either Carteret, Craven, or Onslow County, shows financial need, and maintains a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Awarded to a minority student with a 3.0 grade point average.
Awarded to a Cosmetology student with a GPA of 3.0, who graduated from West Carteret High School, lives in Carteret County, and demonstrates financial need.
Awarded to a student taking college preparation courses who shows financial need.
Awarded to a native of Carteret County who is from Harkers Island or the Down East Carteret County area specifically; a graduate of East Carteret High School whose family has or had a commercial fishing license. Must maintain a 2.5 GPA in a Marine Trades or Medical program and show financial need.
Awarded to a Business Administration student.
Awarded to a United States Marine (Active or Veteran) who maintains a 2.75 GPA or meet Placement Test Score criteria (if new student), enrolled in either Associate in Applied Science or Associate in Arts in Criminal Justice, or Basic Law Enforcement Technology, and who demonstrates financial need.
Awarded to a second-year full-time Criminal Justice student who is a resident of North Carolina, shows financial need, and maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Awarded to a North Carolina resident who has a 3.5 GPA in Associate Degree or Practical Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, Medical Assisting, Radiography, Respiratory Therapy, or Therapeutic Massage.
Awarded to a 2nd year Radiography student with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship award may not exceed the excess of tuition, fees, books, supply charges, and testing fees minus other financial aid. Student must complete a JoAnn Offutt Memorial Scholarship Application.
Awarded to a North Carolina resident who maintains a minimum 2.75 GPA, is a first-generation student in their family to attend college, has a documented learning disability, and shows financial need.
Awarded to a Business Administration student who maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Awarded to a Human Services Technology student who maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Awarded to students in most degree programs with a minimum 3.0 GPA and show financial need.
Student must be enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing curriculum, maintain a 2.75 GPA, and be a Carteret County resident.
Awarded to a student in the Hospitality Management curriculum that enrolls at least 1/2 time (6+ semester hours) and maintains a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Awarded to a second-year Criminal Justice Technology student who maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA, is a resident of North Carolina, and shows financial need.
Three scholarships are awarded: one to an Emergency Medical Science student; one to an Associate Degree or Practical Nursing student; and one to a General Studies student. Students must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, reside in Carteret County, and show financial need.
Awarded to an Associate Degree Nursing non-traditional student who is a North Carolina resident.
Awarded to a graduate of the High School Equivalency (HSE) program who maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.

This scholarship is awarded to a Carteret County resident who enrolls at least 1/2 time (6+ semester hours) in an allied health curriculum.
Awarded to a student who maintains a minimum 2.0 GPA and shows financial need.
Awarded to an Associate Degree Nursing student
Awarded to a Carteret County resident who is a recipient of the Purple Heart, or the child or grandchild of a Purple Heart recipient, or Veteran of the US Military Service. Recipient must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5, show financial need, and attend one Military Order of the Purple Heart meeting.
Student must be a Carteret County resident.
Awarded to a resident of Carteret County who is a graduate of Carteret CC’s Adult High School or earned a High School Equivalency (HSE), shows financial need, enrolls a minimum of half-time, and maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA. Recipient must attend one club function.
Awarded to a second-year student who is a resident of Carteret County, shows financial need and community/college involvement or volunteerism. Student must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Awarded to a Nursing student who shows financial need and maintains a minimum 2.0 GPA.
The Parker Scholarship in Mathematics is a monetary award to a deserving student at Carteret Community College who started out in Developmental Mathematics and has completed all mathematics courses through Trigonometry with a C or better. The recipient of this award has to be a student completing at least Calculus 1 at Carteret Community College.
Awarded to a non-traditional student who demonstrates financial need, with a GPA of 2.0 or above.
Awarded to a student who has overcome hardships and/or struggles to return to college after an absence, and shows financial need. Recipient must attend one club function.
The scholarship is awarded to a Marine Propulsion student who resides in Carteret County and maintains a minimum 2.6 GPA.
Scholarship is awarded to a West Carteret High School graduate who maintains a minimum 2.9 GPA.
This scholarship is awarded to a Horticulture Technology student who resides in Carteret County and maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.
The scholarship is awarded to a College Transfer student who plans to transfer to a four-year institution and major in Education. The student must be a Carteret County resident who enrolls as a full-time student.
Awarded to a vocational/technical student who is a Carteret County resident, maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA, and is a GED or Adult High School graduate.
Awarded to a non-traditional full-time student who shows financial need, and pursues a degree in a Computer Information or Web Technology, Associate Degree or Practical Nursing, or Photographic Technology.
Scholarship is awarded to a female student working either full or part-time.
Awarded to a Carteret County resident who is enrolled in an Associate Degree or Practical Nursing program, while maintaining a 2.5 GPA, and demonstrating financial need.
Awarded to a full-time student in a Health Science (ADN-Nursing, Practical Nursing, Medical Assisting) program who maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.
