Marine Captain’s Licensing (OUPV)

Provides training to mariners seeking their US Coast Guard Operators License as Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) upon Great Lakes, Inland and/or Near Coastal waters as specified in 46 CFR Part 10. Course prepares students for the USCG examination given at Carteret Community College or a USCG Regional Examination Center (REC).

Ideally, students taking this course should have completed a minimum of one year underway on vessels with 90 days of that experience acquired during the three years prior to enrollment. Class includes CPR/First Aid certification. Required: Student must have picture identification at registration. You can register and pay online for this course through Web Advisor.

Upon successful completion of our OUPV License class, the student receives a certificate which, with the complete application, may be submitted to the USCG for the OUPV License. Carteret Community College wants to make sure that all students signing up for the OUPV class understand the USCG requirements for the license. Marine Captain’s Licensing (OUPV, Upgrade and Towing) – 10 Day Class – USCG, Fort Macon

**This session is available to US Coast Guard members ONLY.**

This class will provide students with the information necessary to take the United States Coast Guard examination for Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel “OUPV” 72-hour (six-pack) or master’s license, either inland, near coastal or desired seamanship level certification. Class DOES NOT include the U.S.C.G. required CPR and First Aid training. This class will also include Marine Assistance Towing (4-hours) and the Upgrade OUPV (21-hours). Course developed for the US Coast Guard, Fort Macon. Picture identification required at registration. You can register and pay online for this course through Web Advisor.

Able Seaman

The Able Seaman course is a USCG approved course necessary for all seafaring mariners to work on the decks of large commercial vessels (NC Ferry Division, Tugs & Freighters). Upon completion of the subject matter and demonstrating proficiency through a written examination, the student should be knowledgeable of: Performing all duties and responsibilities of the Able Seaman in a safe, efficient manner in accordance with the rules of good seamanship. The course will ensure that students are cognizant of the regulations and their responsibilities regarding safety, protection of the environment and the Rules of the Road. This course is part “A” of the training/qualifications needed to apply to the USCG for the Able Seaman Rating. To qualify for an “AB Special” rating, applicants must have a minimum of 360 days of sea service and qualify as a Lifeboatman/Lifeboatman Limited. *This course does not provide sea time nor does it include Lifeboatman/Lifeboatman Limited.*   You can register and pay online for this course through Web Advisor

Marine Assistance Towing Endorsement

Provides training and testing for OUPV and Master licenses to provide commercial assistant towing services for hire. You can register and pay online for this course through Web Advisor.   Required: Student must have picture identification at registration.

Upgrade OUPV to Master 100 Tons (Near Coastal)

U.S. Coast Guard course on responsible boating. This United States Coast Guard course covers the following topics:

This course satisfies the North Carolina boating safety education requirement and is required for any person to operate a vessel who was born after January 1, 1998. USCG Auxiliary Suddenly in Command

United States Coast Guard course. This course is designed for students who typically ride on boats but have little experience operating the vessel. The course will cover what to do if the Captain should fall ill or fall overboard and they will need to be “Suddenly in Command”. It will cover some basics of boating such as using the radio, stopping & starting the vessel, and procedures to recover a person in the water.
