Carteret CC Reaffirmed by SACSCOC Morehead City, N.C. (September 4, 2020) – At its annual meeting on September 3, the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) reaffirmed Carteret Community College’s accreditation for another 10 years. SACSCOC is an institutional accrediting agency for degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states, including North Carolina, and is recognized by the United States Department of Education. Colleges accredited by SACSCOC are required to undergo a reaffirmation process every 10 years, with an interim report due after five years. The College submitted its last interim report in 2015. “This is a major accomplishment, particularly because colleges must maintain accreditation to be eligible for students to receive Title IV [federal] financial aid, and more than 70 percent of our students fall into that category,”...

High Schooler Earns College Certificate Community Colleges have something for everyone and that’s exactly what Walker Gordon, a junior at the Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Early College High School on the campus of Carteret Community College discovered. Walker and his brother have a 14-foot McKee Craft and often find themselves working on the 70-horsepower engine. In May 2020, Walker completed his certificate in Marine Propulsions earning him college credits as a high school student. “I started by taking the outboard engine class because I thought it would be fun,” said Gordon. “But then I realized how much I like it and now I want to take every marine class the college has to offer!” With the help of the College’s Boat Building and Manufacturing program, Walker was able to find a summer job at Town Creek...

Improvement Training to Local Companies Daniel Berman, Safety Director and Compliance Officer at Veneer Tech, recently completed his Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt training through Carteret Community College’s Customized Training Program. Berman completed his training online and at no cost to him or his employer. Since completing his training, 11 additional Veneer Tech employees have completed process improvement training. Veneer Tech worked with Carteret Community College’s Customized Training Program to offer the Lean Six Sigma and Fundamentals of Problem Solving programs to their employees. Funding received for job training and career services Carteret Community College and Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board received $523,482 from a federally-funded program called the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA). The funding will be used to assist individuals in gaining and/or maintaining employment and increasing their earnings. The WIOA program offers tuition assistance for curriculum programs and training assistance for short-term training programs that lead directly to jobs identified as “in demand” in the labor market. Training programs can include classroom and online training, on-the-job training, internships, or apprenticeships. The WIOA program offers various employment services such as assistance with job leads and labor market information, resume assistance, education and career assessments, employment readiness and job search workshops, career counseling and career planning, supportive services, and intensive job search assistance. Carteret CC receives $1.4 million grant Carteret Community College is the recipient of the U.S. Department of Education Student Support Services TRIO multi-year grant. The College will receive $294,725 each year for five years totaling $1,473,625 to fund its Student Support Services TRiO program. Carteret Community College was one of approximately 1,100 institutions nationwide that were awarded grant funding. The TRiO program is designed to provide opportunities for academic development, assist with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward successful completion of their post-secondary education. The goal of the TRiO program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. SBC helps local businesses As the Coronavirus continues to impact the economy, the Small Business Center (SBC) located on Carteret Community College’s campus can help local businesses navigate these uncharted waters. Overall Named 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar Landon Overall from Carteret Community College is one of 207 Phi Theta Kappa members across the nation named a 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 nations, with approximately 240,000 active members in the nation’s colleges. Carteret CC Ranked Fourth Carteret Community College was recently ranked fourth in the nation by SmartAsset in its Best Community Colleges in America — 2020 Edition. With many students opting to defer from universities for a year due to COVID-19 and instead taking courses at community colleges, this news is great for those who will be attending Carteret Community College. Fall 2020 COVID-19 Planning Many await the College’s announcement for fall semester plans. Although planning is ongoing, we do know that this fall Carteret Community College will offer a variety of instructional methods to fit the current times and to protect the safety of the learning environment for our students and faculty. Traditional face-to-face curriculum classes will be offered in a socially distanced setting with the number of students set appropriately for each classroom to allow appropriate distance. Synchronous class sections will be offered so that students can log into their instructor’s class at the set time and day and join the “virtual” classroom. Therapeutic massage achieves 100% When the 2020 therapeutic massage graduates began the program in August 2019, their studies were interrupted by Hurricane Dorian. The last eight weeks of their final semester produced even greater educational struggles with the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of those disruptions, the graduating class managed to complete all of their courses and achieve a 100 percent first-attempt passing rate on the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination, the North Carolina State Board licensing examination for massage therapists.
