EMS Graduate Saves A Life A recent graduate from the Carteret CC Emergency Medical Science program, Firefighter Paramedic Mark Rignola found his new paramedic skills put to the ultimate test. While on shift at the Morehead City Fire Department, a woman pulled into the parking lot beeping her horn and yelling for help. Her husband, also in the car, was suffering from a heart attack. Rignola assessed the patient and found him to be unresponsive, pulseless, and apneic. He immediately began CPR. “I knew we didn’t have much time and I needed to start CPR right away,” said Rignola. “In the moment I didn’t even have to think, my training just kicked into action.” With the arrival of additional crew members, responders worked together to provide immediate defibrillation, continuous CPR, and administration of Epinephrine. Carteret CC awarded nearly $1 million USDA grant Morehead City, N.C. (October 12, 2020) – Carteret Community College (Carteret CC) was awarded $960,546 from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program. Carteret CC is one of 116 projects funded by through the USDA DLT grant program. The program helps health care and education institutions buy the equipment and software necessary to deploy distance-learning and telemedicine services to rural residents. Carteret CC awarded $130,822 to fund workforce training scholarships Morehead City, N.C. (October 6, 2020) – Carteret Community College (Carteret CC) was recently awarded $130,822 from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund. These funds, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, are to be utilized by Sept. 30, 2022, and will go toward scholarships for eligible students. Carteret CC Nursing Graduate Receives Service Excellence Award A graduate of the Associate Degree Nursing program at Carteret Community College, Ashley Noffke found employment at CarolinaEast shortly after graduating in May 2020. Carteret CC receives $20,000 grant towards walking trail Morehead City, N.C. (September 30, 2020) – Carteret Community College Foundation is the recipient of Duke Energy Foundation’s 2020 Nature Grant. The Nature Grant funds environmental projects creating access to nature and protecting species, habitats and water quality in North Carolina. Carteret Community College Foundation received $20,000 to help fund a nature trail on Carteret Community College’s campus. The educational nature trail will provide direct access to a non-motorized boat launch, two observation decks and a safe location for residents and visitors of Carteret County to exercise and learn more about the coastal environment. Carteret CC receives $18,000 for short-term workforce scholarships Morehead City, N.C. (September 25, 2020) – Carteret Community College (Carteret CC) received $18,000 from the SECU Foundation to award $500 scholarships to students. The grant is part of SECU Foundation’s Bridge to Career Program Cohort. In 2018, SECU Foundation established the SECU Bridge to Career Program to help remove financial barriers for students seeking to obtain state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials through the Workforce Continuing Education Division of their local Community College that lead to sustainable wage careers within their local communities. MAPS Center finds new home on Carteret CC campus Morehead City, N.C. (September 18, 2020) – The Mentoring, Advising and Planning for Success (MAPS) Center at Carteret Community College recently moved from the McGee Building to the Smith Building where the campus library is housed. The MAPS Center provides academic advising and career planning services to its students. Meet Skye Miller Originally from Connecticut, Skye Miller admits she was never a “star” student. She had an attitude and a tendency to try every teacher’s patience. After moving to Carteret County to live with her grandparents, Skye decided to complete her high school education through the Adult High School program at Carteret Community College rather than repeating a year in the public school system. “The program at Carteret CC was great for someone like me,” says Skye. “I hated school and struggled to sit still all day listening to lectures. Carteret CC Receives Tractor Trailer Donation Morehead City, N.C. (September 4, 2020) – On September 9, Carteret Community College will expand its Commercial Driver License (CDL) program by accepting a donation for an automatic tractor and refrigerated trailer from the Crystal Coast Country Club and its owner, PKS LLC, along with Ryder System, Inc. “We believe in this community and the college,” said Jason Wordsworth, president of PKS LLC.  “With this donation we hope that it will give the students an opportunity for success.
