Carteret CC receives $20,000 grant towards walking trail Morehead City, N.C. (September 30, 2020) – Carteret Community College Foundation is the recipient of Duke Energy Foundation’s 2020 Nature Grant. The Nature Grant funds environmental projects creating access to nature and protecting species, habitats and water quality in North Carolina. Carteret Community College Foundation received $20,000 to help fund a nature trail on Carteret Community College’s campus. The educational nature trail will provide direct access to a non-motorized boat launch, two observation decks and a safe location for residents and visitors of Carteret County to exercise and learn more about the coastal environment. Carteret CC receives $18,000 for short-term workforce scholarships Morehead City, N.C. (September 25, 2020) – Carteret Community College (Carteret CC) received $18,000 from the SECU Foundation to award $500 scholarships to students. The grant is part of SECU Foundation’s Bridge to Career Program Cohort. In 2018, SECU Foundation established the SECU Bridge to Career Program to help remove financial barriers for students seeking to obtain state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials through the Workforce Continuing Education Division of their local Community College that lead to sustainable wage careers within their local communities. MAPS Center finds new home on Carteret CC campus Morehead City, N.C. (September 18, 2020) – The Mentoring, Advising and Planning for Success (MAPS) Center at Carteret Community College recently moved from the McGee Building to the Smith Building where the campus library is housed. The MAPS Center provides academic advising and career planning services to its students. In addition, students can receive academic tutoring through the MAPS Center, and the faculty can receive advisor training. “We are excited to have the MAPS Center. Meet Skye Miller Originally from Connecticut, Skye Miller admits she was never a “star” student. She had an attitude and a tendency to try every teacher’s patience. After moving to Carteret County to live with her grandparents, Skye decided to complete her high school education through the Adult High School program at Carteret Community College rather than repeating a year in the public school system. “The program at Carteret CC was great for someone like me,” says Skye. “I hated school and struggled to sit still all day listening to lectures. Carteret CC Receives Tractor Trailer Donation Morehead City, N.C. (September 4, 2020) – On September 9, Carteret Community College will expand its Commercial Driver License (CDL) program by accepting a donation for an automatic tractor and refrigerated trailer from the Crystal Coast Country Club and its owner, PKS LLC, along with Ryder System, Inc. “We believe in this community and the college,” said Jason Wordsworth, president of PKS LLC.  “With this donation we hope that it will give the students an opportunity for success. Carteret CC Reaffirmed by SACSCOC Morehead City, N.C. (September 4, 2020) – At its annual meeting on September 3, the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) reaffirmed Carteret Community College’s accreditation for another 10 years. SACSCOC is an institutional accrediting agency for degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states, including North Carolina, and is recognized by the United States Department of Education. Colleges accredited by SACSCOC are required to undergo a reaffirmation process every 10 years, with an interim report due after five years. The College submitted its last interim report in 2015. “This is a major accomplishment, particularly because colleges must maintain accreditation to be eligible for students to receive Title IV [federal] financial aid, and more than 70 percent of our students fall into that category,”...

High Schooler Earns College Certificate Community Colleges have something for everyone and that’s exactly what Walker Gordon, a junior at the Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Early College High School on the campus of Carteret Community College discovered. Walker and his brother have a 14-foot McKee Craft and often find themselves working on the 70-horsepower engine. Improvement Training to Local Companies Daniel Berman, Safety Director and Compliance Officer at Veneer Tech, recently completed his Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt training through Carteret Community College’s Customized Training Program. Berman completed his training online and at no cost to him or his employer. Since completing his training, 11 additional Veneer Tech employees have completed process improvement training. Veneer Tech worked with Carteret Community College’s Customized Training Program to offer the Lean Six Sigma and Fundamentals of Problem Solving programs to their employees. Funding received for job training and career services Carteret Community College and Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board received $523,482 from a federally-funded program called the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA). The funding will be used to assist individuals in gaining and/or maintaining employment and increasing their earnings. The WIOA program offers tuition assistance for curriculum programs and training assistance for short-term training programs that lead directly to jobs identified as “in demand” in the labor market. Training programs can include classroom and online training, on-the-job training, internships, or apprenticeships. The WIOA program offers various employment services such as assistance with job leads and labor market information, resume assistance, education and career assessments, employment readiness and job search workshops, career counseling and career planning, supportive services, and intensive job search assistance.
