Overall Named 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar Landon Overall from Carteret Community College is one of 207 Phi Theta Kappa members across the nation named a 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 nations, with approximately 240,000 active members in the nation’s colleges. The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Carteret CC Ranked Fourth Carteret Community College was recently ranked fourth in the nation by SmartAsset in its Best Community Colleges in America — 2020 Edition. With many students opting to defer from universities for a year due to COVID-19 and instead taking courses at community colleges, this news is great for those who will be attending Carteret Community College. Fall 2020 COVID-19 Planning Many await the College’s announcement for fall semester plans. Although planning is ongoing, we do know that this fall Carteret Community College will offer a variety of instructional methods to fit the current times and to protect the safety of the learning environment for our students and faculty. Traditional face-to-face curriculum classes will be offered in a socially distanced setting with the number of students set appropriately for each classroom to allow appropriate distance. Synchronous class sections will be offered so that students can log into their instructor’s class at the set time and day and join the “virtual” classroom. Internet classes will be offered so that students who require a flexible schedule may log in at any time to complete their coursework. Students Encouraged to Apply for COVID-19 Grant Funds Carteret Community College continues to serve its students and the community during the Coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this year, the College was the recipient of CARES Act Higher Education Emergency Relief funding to help students who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. The College received approximately $387,000 to provide emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19. Eligible expenses include a student’s cost of attendance, food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care. Carteret CC Signs MOU with WGU North Carolina Carteret Community College has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with WGU North Carolina, an affiliate of Western Governors University to create a transfer pathway for graduates transferring to WGU North Carolina to complete their bachelor’s degrees. The agreement establishes the principles that several articulated associate degrees at Carteret Community College will transfer to WGU North Carolina. Ramsey selected for Distinguished Alumni Award The Carteret Community College Foundation has awarded Randy Ramsey with the 2020 Carteret Community College Distinguished Alumni Award. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes a Carteret Community College graduate who has exhibited exceptional volunteer or career leadership and personal character. SBC receives $51k grant to help local businesses The Small Business Center located on the Carteret Community College Campus was recently awarded $51,724 to provide counseling to local businesses. In response to COVID-19 and the economic crisis, North Carolina’s General Assembly passed House Bill 1043, providing Pandemic Relief Funds to support Small Business Centers with the express goal of providing counseling and coaching services to businesses negatively affected by the pandemic. Small businesses in Carteret County can contact the Small Business Center to schedule a free counseling appointment. During the initial call, the businesses will be asked what issues they are trying to navigate. The businesses will then be paired with local subject matter experts to receive one-on-one counseling in the specific areas they need help. Local scout prepares college shoreline Carteret Community College has enlisted the help of Ryan Mroch, a Life Scout in Scouts BSA Troop 130 based out of Morehead City, to prepare the campus shoreline to fix damages resulting from Hurricane Florence. Mroch, along with approximately 40 people including scouts from four Scouts BSA troops and community members, began relocating oysters from the section of damaged shoreline along Carteret Community College’s coastline last weekend. The volunteers removed the oysters from the rocks and concrete, placed them in bags, and then relocated them to another part of the shoreline. Carteret CC awards 2020 Dr. Joseph T. Barwick Civic Award Carteret Community College announced that the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is the recipient of the 2020 Dr. Joseph T. Barwick Civic Award.
