Maritime museum specialist seeks college courses Morehead City, N.C. (March 26, 2021) – When Coronavirus shut down the state of North Carolina, the North Carolina Maritime Museum could not welcome visitors to its three locations across the state in Hatteras, Southport, and Beaufort. Jamee Rose, a Museum Specialist at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort, is responsible for designing and developing museum exhibits from maritime research and information. She quickly realized that the pandemic presented new difficulties in how to engage people who couldn’t come to their museum in-person. Rose had already taken a few classes at Carteret Community College in computer programming over the last few years. Sandi Malone Memorial Scholarship Endowment Established Morehead City, N.C. (February 16, 2021) –At the February Board of Trustees meeting, Mr. Lynn Eury presented the Board with a $10,000 check establishing the Sandi Malone Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Finish Line in Sight Meet Jesse Corbett The decision to return to school was not taken lightly by Idaho native, Jesse Corbett. After serving in the National Guard and starting a family, Jesse knew he wanted to pursue a teaching career, but he was not sure where to start. Relocating to Morehead City, Jesse enrolled at Carteret Community College where he heard about the East Carolina University Pirate Promise program. In this program, students are guaranteed admission to ECU after successfully completing their first two-years with Carteret CC. Carteret Community College’s Bochnovic wins top state teaching award Cheryl Burke, Carteret County News-Times MOREHEAD CITY — Carteret Community College instructor Karen Bochnovic is now considered the top community college teacher in the state. The State Board of Community Colleges named her the winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award for 2021 Thursday. The award, sponsored by the R.J. Reynolds Foundation and established in 1985, recognizes community college faculty members who “exemplify the highest quality and standards of instruction throughout the NC Community College System,” according to the NCCCS website. Carteret Community College Good Samaritan Scholarship Established Morehead City, N.C. (January 19, 2021) – The Thomas M. Blevins Samaritan Scholarship was established by Thomas Blevins, along with support from his cousin, Rebecca Davidson. Thomas Blevins, a native of Winston-Salem, is a retired teacher from the Carteret County Public School System.  After 34 years of teaching, he knows the importance of obtaining a degree or trade skill. “Education is what helps students become productive members of our community,” says Mr. Blevins. “And shapes them to be good Samaritans.” It is Mr. Blevins’ mission to help establish the basis for students to become lifelong learners and to inspire the love of learning.
